Diabetes Type 1 and Firearm license?

Post by TheFirearmEnthusiast » 17 Nov 2019, 6:47 am

Hi Guys

I hope youse are well

Just a quick question;

Obviously in order to qualify for a firearm license, you need to be "fit and proper"

However I do have diabetes type 1
But I did get a signed letter from my doctor which I've attached to my application saying that:
- I am fit and proper
- That my diabetes is 100% under control
- That I don't pose a threat to myself or the community due to my diabetes due to the possession and use of firearms
- That I am of good and proper character
- That everything is 100% fine with me essentially
- I've never had any complications or problems relating to my diabetes

So I guess my question is;

If you have Diabetes Type 1
Would that automatically disqualify you from being a firearm license owner?

Or would I be okay in my case?
- Since I got clearance from my doctor
- Since I've never had any complications or problems whatsoever relating to my diabetes
- Since I've got my diabetes under great control

I had a girlfriend that had very serious diabetes that eventually killed her. She would have "hypos" that would knock her out, but otherwise I can't see any way diabetes can affect your ability to control a firearm.

G'day TheFirearmEnthusiast mate diabetes doesn't affect your gun licence my mrs has it and has 3 needles per day and she was told unless she was a danger to herself then she could have a licence and she has one it was explained to her that the disorders the licencing branch were looking for were the ones that made you pose a potential danger to others like bad depression, skitso disorders ,bipola, mostly mental disorders I think you see what I mean she asked but was never required to produce a medical certificate but that's here in QLD but driving a car was a different matter :thumbsup:

Fit and Proper has nothing to do with your fitness or health, it is about your standing in society.

I thought fit... meant as in legally not physically.

A bit long but this explains it quite well.

Another example.. but here meaning is explained at the start by a couple of examples

So don't worry about your diabetes mate
