Shotgun magazine capacity

Post by Tomotron » 29 Jun 2021, 12:05 pm

I was wondering, does the five round magazine limit for Cat B lever action/release shotguns and Cat C shotguns mean 5+1 (five in the magazine, one in the chamber) or 4+1 (four in the magazine, one in the chamber which equals to five)? I believe this answer would apply to all states and territories. Unlike the UK and elsewhere, we don't explicitly use terms such as "5+1" and "4+1" in our legislation.

G'day Tomotron,
Mag capacity, as defined, applies to the magazine only not the firearms capacity under all circumstances, Cheers.

Cheers No1Mk3, so that means a maximum capacity of 5+1?

No. In Queensland the law states "with a magazine capacity no greater than 5 rounds" is a cat C shotgun. So you could in theory have multiple 5 round magazines with multiple barrels and still be a cat C.

By "5+1", I mean the magazine holds five and one is "stored" in the chamber, which will be fired first. The chamber is not a magazine.

Yes. Just have a 5 round maximum capacity magazine and you will be legal for that licence type.
