Rifling in middle of barrel only?

Post by horter » 19 Oct 2013, 10:13 am

G'day,

I'm looking for some information on rifling the centre of a barrel only...

This must have a name but I don't know what it is to search for it.

I found a random picture on a website of a barrel which was rifled in the middle only, and smooth inside both ends.

There is a foot note about it improving spin but nothing else?

Cheers.

They are called Probert barrels. Ian Thompson did a article in the Australian Shooter mag. Aug 2013

It's an artillery barrel thing though, no?

Not used in anything as small-beans as a rifle.

The theory is that the smooth bore at the end of the barrel smooths down any rifling marks on the projectile which are done to the bullet when fired.

Removing the burs creates less drag on the spin of the projectiles so that it remains the same for longer and slows down and a slower rate.

Pretty sure we're talking about tank canon barrels and the like though, nothing like this in a soliders/hunters rifle AFAIK.

Why wouldn't rifle barrels benefit from the same?

They would but it comes down to $$$$$$$ Big dollar guns dont sell, at least in the volumes needed to justify it.

It may well do, but like on_one_wheel said - $$$.

Very difficult to rifle the centre of a barrel only. On a canon barrel you have a lot more working room too. Imagine trying to rifle the middle of a .223 barrel only and how little space you'd have to work in...

Too hard for too little reward.

There's one "rifle" I know of which only had rifling the last few inches of the barrel, it's a holland & holland double barrel parradox, in 10ga. The idea being it could be used with shotgun shells or solid brass cartriges(hence the rifling) for african/American big game.
Not 100% sure on all the details but I think that's correct, read about it in a big game hunting book ages ago
