URGENT UPDATE
“Very Powerful Firearms” – Reasonable justification in WA

Recently WAPOL have been sending letters to licensed firearms owners in WA who own ‘Very Powerful Firearms’ (VPF)
The police define VPF as “firearms designed to hit targets at 1500 metres and further" more commonly known as Long Range Precision Rifles.

We understand the letters are being sent to anyone who has a firearm chambered in .300 or greater and are requesting the licensed firearm owner to justify the possession of ‘such very powerful firearms’ by demonstrating they ‘possess suitable shooting skills and experience to safely and effectively engage targets at these extended distances.’
The police are no doubt looking for excuses to revoke firearms licences for these particular firearms.
You will need to word your response very carefully to prevent your licence being revoked.

If you receive one of these letters, please feel free to contact us. If you have already responded to the police and your licence is revoked, we are happy to help. With a unified, consistent approach, each shooter has a better chance of keeping their guns.
Save our numbers in your phone. Remember we do all types of criminal legal work.

WA governments of any colour seem to always have been fearful of a population armed with even modestly powerful firearms.

Unashamedly copied from another forum.

Not sure about how things happen in WA but here in Qld the various categories are set out in 'Weapons Categories Regulation' which are set by the Parliament. Undoubtedly, Police will have their input into the framing of that document, but nevertheless, it remains the jurisdiction of the Parliament.

Are we to believe, as it is being described, that WAPOL have made some arbitrary decision that something that they do not like is within their authority to so categorise? Or, has there actually been an amendment to the categories?

It's been said here before by accident, I'll repeat it on purpose for clarity.

I'm pretty sure they don't need parliament to change regulations only legislation. The government of the day can change regulations without any parliamentary vote. :unknown: :drinks:
