in Vic you have to have a permit for knives or swords ect
apparently if you have a valid reason you don't have to have the permit for the knife eg.. fishing knife, butcher/cooks roll of knifes for work ect
the law apparently came about from the asian's chopping each other up with samurai swords
why you do not see people with a pocket knife pouch on there belt but you do see a lot of box cutters
gives vicpol something to do, makes the state a safer place  :sarcasm:

Cool, so how do we apply for a permit to carry a Swiss Army Knife then?

This is nothing new.
The simple answer is to have a lawful excuse or don't carry a knife.

With any luck the magistrate will understand and give you a repremand and a 'don't do it again'!

I live on a couple of hundred acres and i make sure i don't leave knives and such in my ute because i know if i get a cranky cop i am in trouble. This is Tas but when i lived in Vic it was the same deal: do not carry weapon without lawful excuse such as: on the way to or from fishing/hunting/camping or legitimately use it for employment.

Sorry you have to front to court but that is just the way it is. If you are legally allowed to carry a knife, so are all the little gangstars who will happily use it to stick you with andf the hoppers will have no option to arrest/confiscate from these little pricks if the law allows everyone to carry a knife. Been this way for years/decades. Used to be only against concealed weapons, that's why you used to see people with knife pouches on their belt (me included) but that all changed back in the early 90s.

The worrying bit about this is if he loses the case he is likely going to lose his firearms licence too. Copper clearly is not applying the law as intended. Give the good coppers a bad name.

Gwion is right and people need to understand this. You just cannot carry a knife around in this country without a reason that is relevant to have one on you at the time. You don’t have to like this, but understand it or it’s a free kick for the police. This is a good piece to read:

I had a similar thing yrs ago in nsw, I have a leatherman for work (use it cut safety tape and cable) I was pulled over after work, had picked the dog up and was taking him down to the park with a baseball bat and 2 balls, I gave consent to a search and didn't think anything of it, long story short I was given a warning and my baseball bat and leatherman where held for 72hrs needless to say after that I only ever played normal fetch with the mutt after that and only take the Leatherman with me if i know 100% I'll need it, just isn't worth the hastle these days
