Acquiring a barrel in Qld

Post by Cal-ApeR » 14 Aug 2018, 9:38 pm

I'm in Qld and looking at acquiring a second hand barrel from W.A. Will I require aPTA for this? I will not be rebarelling any of my rifles for sometime but thought I'd pick this one up for now as it's a calibre I'm interested in.

I find Qld WLB a little painful with these types of questions but I will call them if I have to.

Cheers

From the Queensland Weapons Act, Dictionary, this: -

firearm means—
(d) a major component part of a firearm.

But, is it serial numbered and therefore tracable?
I have a feeling that it might be a bit of a grey area that is open to (mis)interpretation.
Depending on what is required for it to exit WA, could it be that you are buying a piece of "pipe"?

Haha, piece of pipe works for me. I don't believe it has a serial number, it's on the action. I guess I'll follow the lead from the W.A end and see what Qld WLB want.

if its on the action it's a firearm so it has to be sent from dealer to dealer and put through there books
if it is just the barrel you can send it without and just through the post
its the action that has to be registered and put through the books not the barrel
ring the registry to be sure but I do it all the time

Is it any wonder that people think the law is an ass? Or maybe it isn't, after all - A barrel is a piece of pipe

From the Queensland Weapons Act, Section 50A, Possession of Unregistered Firearms.

(1) A licensee must not possess an unregistered firearm.
Maximum penalty—120 penalty units.
(2) A licensed dealer or licensed armourer does not contravene
subsection (1) if the unregistered firearm is entered in the
dealer’s or armourer’s weapons register under section 71.
(3) In this section—
firearm does not include a barrel
, breechbolt or top slide of a
firearm.
unregistered firearm means a firearm for which information
is not entered in the firearms register.

Then, if you go to the last pages of the Act, the included Dictionary has this gem: -

firearm means—
(d) a major component part of a firearm
;

ipso facto, a barrel is not a major component of a firearm.

Make of that what you will.
