PTA wait time in NSW

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

Had a theory about the long wait times.
The drought has seen a lot of roos, pigs, deer, etc etc come out of the scrub and ont private land.
Many people I’ve talked to have huge roo and pig numbers and have also had deer coming to look for feed.
Maybe there is currently a need for a lot of farmers to update with some new firearms?
I’ve bought a new 22 and a 410 recently. My pta’s took 2 weeks before I saw the payment go through.

I doubt it.
People on the land generally own a rifle, just because there is more of a certain pest doesn't mean they would buy more rifles..A rifle that killed a Pig or Goat last year when there may have been less of them would still kill that animal today..an ammo shortage could be attributed to the scenario you described above but..

Had a mate ring them and asked about the wait time, they said they still haven’t caught up with the influx or registrations from the amnesty.

They would blame the change in wind direction if they could..

Two rumours i've heard so adding some conjecture

1) They sacked a large number of the firearms registry girls

2) New online system is delayed due to budget blowout

Now putting this together - With less staff the budget has more buffer to fund the new system. Meanwhile existing staff are over extended and services are impacted.

So failed IT rollout = poor service and long waits, nothing new here.

Wylie27 wrote:Spoke with the registry, they are backed up significantly. Licence and PTA applications at record levels, i quote the girl i spoke to here “every person in NSW has just got a licence and is buying a firearm”

Clearly exaggerating, but they have major backlog along with the staff reduction and the failure to implement the online pta system.

Will be a bumpy ride for NSW shooters for a while i think.

"Bumpy ride" implies movement.

I dug up this older thread to comment on my experience.
Yesterday I applied for two Cat A pta's around 4pm and this morning at 6am says they have been sent. That's very quick. I can recall it taking a week during covid peak times. No such problem now.

Geez that's odd. Seems a bit random sometimes. Have you had your licence long? I found my first couple took a while and from then on they were much quicker.

One word of advise to new shooters. There is a glitch in the system. We all know about the the 28 days cooling period for first PTA.

Now for those intending to do multiple purchases. Every one of the PTA application will incur its own 28 days waiting period before a first PTA is issued. Say put in your first application today, and 27 days later you apply for a second one, the system will assign another 28 days of waiting for the second application. But if you wait till the 29th day for the first PTA to be issued, the second one will be issued the next day.

Also bear in mind A and B are treated differently.

At least it was like that last year.
