Transferring a pistol NSW

Post by chudly » 15 Jan 2014, 7:37 pm

Hey guys and gals,

I am a newbie to this forum but was a member of shooting.com.au for a long time until it went arse up...

Anyway, I plan on buying a firearm from a guy who lives approx 6 hours from me (private sale) and I wanted to know how I go about the transfer.

We are both in NSW. I know I need to have the firearm posted to my local dealer but everything I have read says we both need to be there for the transfer which is impossible.

Can anyone help me out here as its the first time I have bought from a private seller.

Thanks in advance.

When you get it transferred to a dealer it goes on their books and they sign it into your name. So basically you buy it from the dealer not the private seller

Private sale or otherwise, everything has to go through a dealer. You can't "buy direct" under any circumstance.

This is the spiel from the NSW Pol website for you:

What if I am acquiring a firearm in NSW?
All firearms transactions, both acquisition and disposal, must be witnessed by a licensed NSW Firearms Dealer. The dealer will return the section titled 'Notice of Purchase' to the Firearms Registry to finalise the transfer of Registration of the firearm.

If there is no licensed Firearms Dealer within 100km of the residential address of both the buyer and the seller, the transaction may be witnessed by an authorised police officer.

I'd just call the store that will be doing the transfer. They may be happy/able to receive a faxed copy of your license and ID?

Failing that, you have the option to have it witnessed by one of the local plod.

Thanks for the welcome guys,

Called my local dealer and was told the seller has to get his dealer to do his part of the disposal and then post to my dealer for the transfer so that's been sorted, just have to wait now, hopefully not too long.

Next thing to do is sort out a genuine reason for my rifles seen as my R licence has expired and have no way of renewing it until the Gov sorts out their s**t.

Thanks again guys,
