No. They're just a restricted import. Legal to import and own, provided you have an approved permit., just like firearms and ammunition

It would depend on the state. If magazines are restricted possession in your state then you probably can't make your own. If they'e not classed as firearm parts then go for it.

There are no mag restrictions on a 22 but having said that I doubt you would get away with a 50 odd round drum mag and certainly cannot see a B709 being issued for one. Isn't there a normal 15 round mag available for that gun.

If you get caught with a homemade 50 round drum mag be prepared to loose your licence and gun.

Unless there is a specified limit in the law then I can't see any problem with owning whatever size mags you wish to.

In Victoria you can modify a firearm provided it maintains minimum barrel and overall lengths and does not change its category. You can convert a single-shot .22LR to a repeater (15rd max) as it's still CatA, but you can't convert it to centrefire CatB or semi-auto CatC, at least not without approval. You can change chambering but it has to be notified on the registration.

Yep, take it off you first, then make up a law to justify it afterwards.

This isn't true. There is absolutely no problem with having 50 round drum mags. I have a 22 round drum mag for my Category A straight pull shotgun. The police genuinely do not care.
