Category C For Clay Target Shooting In Vic

Post by Crazy » 07 Nov 2018, 10:13 pm

Reasontlly I have been seeing a fair amount of category c shotguns around Victoria in the clay target clubs and was wondering how one goes about getting one. So I had a look around and haven’t found that much information about it, according to Vicpol you have to hold one for a junior, have a medical condition or owned one and been apart of a club before November 15th 1996. So I was wondering could you get a category c for compition clay target shooting? Because I have been told I could but haven’t found much information about it. If anyone has gone through the process, point me in the right direction. Cheers.

Pretty sure if you want cat C for clays, it needs to be because of a medical condition that makes using a break action shotgun difficult/impossible to operate. So the gov will allow you to use a semi auto shotty with a tubular magazine (easier to reload) instead. Only catch is it has to be modified to only have a total capacity of 2.

You can apply on medical grounds for competition only - can't use it anywhere else..

Fair warning, if you go down the medical reasons path, you will have to justify any rifles that don't conform to your medical issues. It's not a loophole to obtain a cat C firearm.

Do you shoot any other heavy-recoiling rifles in one session as much as you would a shotgun shooting clay competition though?

I just know there is a lot more to it than "yeah got a sore arm, need an autoloader". If you have large calibre firearms already, they will question why you can shoot them and not an underover. Also a fair bit of fkn around to get the medical thing signed off. Not saying it can't be done, just pointing out if it's not a fair dinkum claim you could cause yourself some headaches.

I agree with you.
My messed up shoulder would prohibit me from shooting clay competition, but it doesn't affect my ability to shoot 12ga clays, .30-06, 7.62x54R, etc at home or when hunting. I couldn't shoot a hundred or two rounds of heavy-recoiling rifles or shotgun in a session though. If I were interested in shotgun competition I would likely apply for CatC myself, although I'd really like to try a shotgun muzzle brake.

If recoils not an issue why bother with all the expense and hassles, if it is I guess it's worth doing other than that there's no real advantage as both go bang each time you pull the trigger and both only have a 2 shot capacity.

Thanks for the answers, i don't currently have a medical condition that would stop me from shooting a normal over and under i was wondering if you were able to get one if you compete in competitions on club grounds.

No thanks, the rest of your laws make that an unfair trade!

And the best collectors laws. Anything other than Cat D is super super easy to get here, no need to prove anything or deactivate the guns

But yeah overall our system is pretty ******
