Importing brass and bullets from US?

Post by andym79 » 03 May 2014, 8:30 am

Hi guys does anyone know what permits I need either or and both ends to import brass and projectiles from the US?

I assume I would need form B709 this end? What about the US side?

If I need to get a US export permit, will that be $250 just for some brass and projectiles?

All that is needed at this end is a B709 import permit, no problem for brass, and I presume the same for projectiles, but post would be a worry there, because of the weight, unless you want to try for a large shipment by sea (allow 10 - 12 weeks).

The problem is getting it out of the US, where a US$250 export permit would be required.

No such permit or licence is required from Canada, but post from there tends to be expensive, as it is from the UK.

No worries here, the problem is the US side and their ITAR restrictions on exporting firearms and related items.

Export permit is one thing, some places just won't ship it either.

Decide and sort this out before you pay for anything. A few guys here have been burned by buying things like display ammo for a collection then finding they could not get it out of the US.

Brass, primers, loose projectiles, anything that makes a cartridge even if it isn't in one needs import permit.

They can be imported into Aus.

Just needs a permit for each individual shipment.

May be some taxes to pay on import too.

Don't forget importing into Aus isn't the problem. It's exporting it from the US.

Those sending it need and export license which you can't get/help with. They need to be willing/able to ship which many aren't.

The only thing I'd add to that is that for some higher profile stuff like .50BMG additional clearances are required I believe.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but the subject is perfect.
Has there been any change to this regarding the US side? I've bought 3 second hand sets of RCBS dies so far, and am looking at some 7mm WBY brass as well. The B709A looks to not be an issue. BUT, what about the US side? Am I going to have trouble with the dies in my checked luggage, and what about the brass (although I'm happy to not buy the brass if it alone presents a problem)

Dies are no problem but some sellers in the U.S just put it all in the "too hard" basket. Brass requires an export permit from the U.S which start at $250 U.S.
You won't have any problems with the dies in your luggage, you don't even have to declare them. Brass however, requires all the paperwork as it is a "restricted item".

G'day d3driver,
You should have no issues regarding the dies, but a US State Dept export licence is needed for the brass. Usually not worth buying brass from the US unless you are buying quantities or items hard to obtain here, due to the fee, plus exchange rate, plus postage etc. Cheers

I recon if everyone chipped in here on the forum, it'd be worth it. :) Even for ammo.

The trouble with that idea is that the quantity then adds up to a lot of weight and the postage skyrockets. Unless it is brass that is impossible to get here, it is usually not viable $-wise.

Thanks all for the replies. Dies are arriving at my sister-in-laws' place in the next couple of days. Might buy a couple of tools while I'm there in December too.

Email Bruce at Brownells.com.au and ask if he can get you some 7mm Weatherby brass through Brownells.com. If he can then they already have all the permits in place.

Although, RebelGunWorks has stock.
