yep, i was told that the WLB knows they are slow and it is regularly brought up in meetings and hearings and they have hundreds of people processing these applications but they can't keep up. They are regularly poked fun at from other departments on how slow they do this.

i just can't believe in this day and age that they are still manually processing these things. surely there could be some sort of application that automatically processes 90% of the work and have the remaining 10% looked over by a human?

I was doing some rough numbers earlier. According to http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/queensland, each year there is an increase of licences by about 5000-7000. Lets call it 6000 new licences per year. That means ~500 applications per month or about 17 applications per day. So if they had 20-30 licence processors, they should easily be able to crunch all incoming applications, right? I doubt that a licence takes a full business day to approve!

PTAs are a different story, there is a lot of them coming through, but at the moment they seem to be taking a couple of days to approve and shouldn't require much actual work at all, as most don't even include a serial number of the firearm! Basically just caliber.

So I am confused, either my numbers are very wrong (possible, I have double and triple checked them though, I don't see anything out of the blue), or approving an application takes someone a full business day to do! Like said above, they have 'hundreds' of processors, so I am not really sure what is happening here. Thoughts?

Maybe your calculation is a bit off. 6000, 52 weeks, 5 day/week, gives me ~23 per business day. A small difference.

WLB problems don't end there though.
How about this; how long should it take for them to decide whether or not a particular firearm is, in Queensland, an antique. The specific article has already been declared to be an antique in both Victoria and NSW, and it is shown on Qld WLB web site as "ammunition not commercially available - approved (antique). Is that difficult? Well, nobody knows, because after waiting 5 weeks nobody has even looked at the paperwork. Not even a 'case number' assigned.
Not bad for a "user pays" system.

Oh you are probably correct there, the 17 per day number is not taking into account business days, thats why I said 20-30 processors, should have clarified!

And yeh, considering that we pay for this service, its pretty shocking! 5 weeks and no case number! Wow. What are they doing over there!?

So I emailed them a few weeks back, and they told me to go and do the ID check. That was about the 10 week mark.

Today I rang them, and they confirmed what we have been hearing around here, which is the current wait is '14-15 weeks', so it looks like I still have another 2-3 weeks wait!

Pathetic!

Lodged PTA on the 31st May for a 9mm. Called a few times after the two week mark, they said "shouldn't be too long now" blah blah, then called again this morning and the following was their answer; "when did you lodge you're PTA application?" I told them 31st May, was snickered at by the PTA officer and said that they're currently doing processing on the 30th....of June, i take it? so the new standard PTA turn around is 4 weeks? Has this been the basic experience by others? I'm in QLD.

Given that the bureaucratic system is, allegedly, a "user pays" system, I suggest all you Queenslanders who are having difficulties, read the Qld Weapons Act 1990, specifically section 42, and the QLD Weapons Regulations 2016, specifically section 101. The Act and Regulations prescribe the waiting period/s. If WLB can't achieve those time lines, then I suggest you take it up with your parliamentary representative and have them ask why it is that a "user pays" system seems to be so under-resourced. You have to be bold enough to "kick the nest" sometimes.
