License Question In Victoria - Newbie to Industry

Post by Clarkey » 11 Nov 2014, 11:04 am

Im currently looking at getting a Category License A & B license to eventually get a .223 however looking at the prices of the fees its going to cost nearly $500 just to get the license. Is it possibly just to get category b license instead of both, then it would only cost around the $250 mark.

Would love somone to shed some light on this for me.

Thanks

Welcome Clarkey.

About the license category. It's either an A or an A/B. Not just B.

I think you've got a wire crossed about the license costing double though. I'm pretty sure it was the same either way and didn't cost double for an A/B.

I didn't get mine too long ago and it was about $250 for an A/B. Not $500 I'm sure.

From VIC Police firearm fees and charges 2013-2014 page on website.

Longarm category A license $210.60

Longarm category A/B license $243.30

The $243.30 is for the license with both, you don't add it to the A.

Yeah isn't explained clearly on the prices page I guess.

When you fill out your license application though you'll see the 2 license options are 'A' or 'A/B'.

Then the two fees for one or the other.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and the sport :)

"Hunting" and "target shooting" and both genuine reasons for getting your license and firearms. You application doesn't need to be an essay arguing your case, you don't need to specify land owners or properties and all that.

When you apply for your license, just make sure you tick hunting. Hunting lets you do target shooting and hunting, if you only tick target shooting you can't hunt with it (I'm in NSW but 99% sure that's the case for Victoria). Joining the SSAA is also 'supporting documentation' for these and the SSAA is a registered hunting club.

Once you have your license (with hunting on it) you submit your PTA (permit to acquire firearm) with hunting as the reason and that's it.

Just get your firearms dealer to do it. If you send off the PTA yourself it takes a few weeks. If you get your dealer to do it they submit it on the computer and the PTA will be approved inside a day usually in Victoria.

You might want to get yourself a Game Licence in case you want to go bush….but you can't hunt deer with a .223.

Yep, a game license is required to hunt deer.

.223 isn't legal for this as North East said.

.243 with 85gr bullets for hog, fallow and chital deer.
.270 with 130gr bullets for sambar, rusa and red.

That's if you even want to do that. If you want to punch paper, bust bunnies, shoot foxes and all that then ignore the above.

Makes perfect sense.

Not saying you need anything bigger first just FYI with the game license stuff.

In a nutshell... Game license required for deer with calibre restrictions. Game license required for birds with shottys as well.

Everything else is fair game over there I'm 99% sure?

No requirements for ferals... Rabbits, foxes, goats, pigs, cats...

There is no calibre restriction for ferals - rabbit, fox, pig, goat. 223 is a great calibre for goat. Deer are regarded as game animals and do have restrictions. You need a Game licence for Deer. No Game licence required for rabbit, fox, pig, goat, cat to hunt in state forest or private property.

However you can purchase a $9 Expression of Interest to Hunt Pest Animals on Crown Land (which you don't actually need to hunt in state forest) that you can provide with your Firearms licence application form (however in your individual case you have the family 150acres and can use this for justification for firearms licence). However the Expression of Interest to Hunt Pest Animals on Crown Land can be useful for people without a hunting property when first applying for their Vic firearms licence.

If I get a cat b license with hunting in private and crown land as the reason do I have to pay the $9 'interest to hunt on crown land fee'?
I had understood that simply having a cat b license let me hunt on unoccupied crown land (not game animals)

I wouldn't rule out a SSAA membership as it comes with Public Liability and if you pay and extra $25 you can get $25 worth of firearm insurance.
