Confirming I can borrow a friends rifle

Post by samf » 09 Oct 2013, 4:57 pm

New to this shooting business so forgive the newbie question :)

I'd like to borrow a mates rifle to get a feel for it before buying one of the same, so I can do a few trips to the range and out and get a good feel for it.

We're both licensed, I have the storage, gun is on the books and all that...

I'm good to borrow his rifle for a while, right?

Er, to clarify that...

Yes, IF you have the same category long arm license.

Obviously you can not borrow a Cat B firearm if you only have a Cat A license.

You can, but "borrow" is the key word here.

A couple of weeks is fine, I wouldn't let it turn into months though or you'll start to get into muddy waters about what the specified storage address is.

A letter from him explaining you are borrowing it wouldn't hurt for your paper trail either. That way if you get a safe inspection while borrowing it you have some paperwork handy to explain why you have a rifle that's not on your books.

You need a letter with his details and license no, your details and license no and the details of the gun and both sign it.
Just to cover both your asses if the cops come and do a safe check.

Yep, always best to cover your ass as much as possible with these things.

you can also call the firearms registry and they will happily answer any questions like this.
E.G As I found out last week you can borrow a rifle from a gunshop (as in it is listed in their books, can be on consignment from a private seller as well) for up to one week - 7 days. You then have to return it on the last day so they site it and then if able you can borrow it for another 7 days.

Seems there's a big crack down on that at the moment.

Apparently some people are "borrowing" firearms from some unscrupulous dealers, and leaving the full price of the gun as deposit.

They never quite settled on a return date either apparently...

I had a friends rifle in my safe when I had a safe inspection, as I was borrowing his shotgun while he was interstate.
They just asked me what is that firearm its not on our list, I explained to him that I was borrowing it as I had no shotty and it was duck season, and he said yeah no worries, took the number down and left it at that.

Was no big deal.

As long as everyone's on the level and everyone's on the books it should be no issue.

Sight his license and get a copy of his permit, then you've done your due diligence and you can explain the additional rifle with the permit copy no worries.
