Storage requirements for camping/shooting trip.

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 12 Oct 2016, 9:29 pm

Gday guys I'm going camping with my old man, uncle and cousin in a couple of weeks on private property near Bright and we are taking some guns as there's lots of deer/foxes on the farm and I was just wondering what the requirements are for storing the rifles/ammo.
Thanks

In QLD mate, I look em in the car ( rifles ) bolts in the Glove box and ammo in a looked ammo crate. I would check with your local plod to see what the requirements are for the State you're in.

Bolts don't have to be seperate in glove box.

As far as how to store them, in QLD Regs and I assume all the others there is a section on "storage when away from secure storage facilities". That is your answer

In Victoria all that's required is ammo be locked up separate from firearms. A tool box would be OK. Not certain about the glove box. Firearms need to be locked in car out of sight, preferably in the boot or locked box. But behind the seat in a ute would be OK. I sometimes lay them on back seat of a sedan in soft cases but cover with a blanket.
Keys to car obviously must be in hands of a licensed person. Trigger locks add a little security.
Each state is different.

There are different rules for traveling and for leaving in unattended car/camp. Check the local rules yourself - it is your neck on the line.

1. I'm not sure, and

2. This may not be applicable to you but...

... I believe it is also illegal to carry firearms in a national park. You mention you're going to a private property - but how are you going there? (I'm not sure if the area contains national parks, and/or if you are going to be driving through them to get to your destination) but if you are, it might be worth checking out?

There are some national parks in Victoria that allow game hunting at certain times.

Other puny calibre rifles... What man would want you now?
