Silencers. Legal or not ?

Post by colinbentley » 23 Oct 2016, 4:32 pm

I've just watched on the internet an American video on how to make a silencer for your rifle. Is it legal to use a silencer in Australia ? Not that I intend making one,I'm just posing the question .

Suppressor or sound moderators are prohibited in Australia.

You can own one if the commissioner deems you worthy...

Even more than that, it is illegal to use _any_ sort of device to reduce the sound signature of a firearm, including muzzle brakes or flash hiders that offer any sound suppression abilities.

But we allowed to make our own subsonic ammunition to reduce the sound...makes perfect sense :-)

Short version of the above is you can't have one just because you want one. (Even though it would be great for all ours ears).

In VIC I believe the only way one of us civies can get their hands on one is if it's for professional pest control in/near a built up area.

And like getting primary producer license you have to demonstrate taxable income, paying clients etc. It has to be a full fledged business, not doing a favour for a mate with a farm.

That's what I remember from previous conversations on it.
