It's not just Victoria that has issues with locking up crims here in South Australia, Australia's back waters, the crims don't have to go to prison they can nominate Home Detention and get it.
But heaven forbid if one gets caught with a .22lr round dropped while spotlighting and unknowingly ends up lodged somewhere under the front seat you are instantly treated as Australia's most wanted criminal. No slap on the wrist for you, but you do get to see the full force of the law first hand.
That's how f***** up this country can be...... minority rule while the majority remain quiet in disgust,,,,,,,,, .
We have a handful of states with strict gun laws and maybe two with very harsh penalties, one being New Jersey. One of the common complaints is that they often let criminals plea away the gun violations and just prosecute them on the underlying crime. Law abiding citizens? No way, they get the full sentence for the gun violations. Makes it pretty obvious what the real purpose of gun laws is, doesn't it?
New Jersey requires a carry license to have a handgun anywhere except your home, the range, your business, etc. Unfortunately, New Jersey is one of the 3 states where it is nearly impossible to get a carry permit. Cops found a law abiding citizen with two unloaded handguns in his trunk, in his garage, at his apartment. Determined he had been taking them to and from his mom's house, put him in jail FOR SEVEN YEARS.
Fortunately for him, the case got some media attention. The country was so outraged that Attorney's General from like 30 other states started writing nasty letters to New Jersey telling them we were getting tired of their crap and they better do something about it. The governor commuted his sentence and let him out.
Jersey had always been doing things this way, but it never really go the attention of the rest of the country. Very shortly after, Jersey started arresting people from out of state for carrying guns. They would get pulled over, give the cop their license and their carry license and announced that they were carrying. Off to jail. This has happened before over the decades, but it never really got much media. Plus, many Jersey cops would tell the guy or girl, "You can't have a gun here, turn your car around and leave the state" because it was obvious the person had no idea the trouble they were getting into. But now the Jersey cops don't give passes. Well, the country went friggin ballistic. That was it, enough was enough. The Jersey AG wrote a memo to all district AGs and the police telling them that if there is reason to believe an out of stater did not know they could not carry a gun to let them go.
So, now in New Jersey, the criminals are not prosecuted*, people from out of state are not prosecuted*, only the Jersey citizens are thrown in jail
If I lived there I would be Fing Pissed!
