Storing rifle bolt with ammunition

Post by buster » 02 Dec 2013, 9:41 am

Hi guys,

Just wanting to clarify as I've read some mixed info...

We have to store firearms and ammo separately obviously.

I can store my bolts with ammunition though right? I figure this is safest as if someone steals a rifle with no bolt they obviously can't do much with it.

But then I read that a bolt is treated as a firearm legally :?

Help?

I think you might be blending two issues here... The bolt is treated like a firearm in terms of registration and licensing and so on. e.g. you can't have a bolt if you don't have a license. It will have a serial and need to be on the books somewhere and so on.

Same as if you had a barrel only, it's not a firearm but is treated in the same way for licensing and registration.

I'm sure any cop with half a brain would appreciate you separating the rifle and bolt as long as the bolt is stored securely. If it was in an internal ammunition compartment of a safe or somewhere like that where it added an extra layer of security against thieves, I can't see how there would be a problem.

What this in Aus or in the US?

My rifles have the serial on the barrel and action...

That's the stuff that worries me.

I have no doubt 99% of the safe inspection guys are fine.

But there is probably that 1 guy who's just out to give people grief. I reckon I'll get that guy for my safe inspection

There have been a few stories floating round here of people who had their rifles stolen but had kept the bolts elsewhere themselves.

As you got, it was received well by the police because the thief isn't in a position to do any harm with a boltless rifle.

Yeah, they're not all the lunatics that the few horrors stories paint them as.

I was under the impression all barrels must have serials too. Maybe not required for the slide though as it's not technically a "barrel"

I dunno though...

Just to confuse things more, I've been looking at the Sako Quad rifles lately. You can order extra barrels whenever... Serials wouldn't match the action obviously...

I dunno, I'll write back when I get to a store and look at an actual barrel and see what's on it.

Or maybe this is just different for Cat A firearms?
