I'll call Sean tomorrow and see what he knows, he's actually a friend of mine. Buy back would be cool, I've got exactly $58,150 invested in DTA rifles and since they are the government I'll give them the mates rates price of $120k :)

Chatting to Sean now and will chase up my registry contacts on Monday for an update cause this is going to get nasty if they go the Adler path or want to confiscate them.

If all this is true with the banning of a bolt action rifle because of its looks i think the SSAA need to get their heads out of their asses
this was all done under darkness by the powers to be and the SSAA did or should have known about this
Geez it was kept quiet ,Chr#%t what next a licence for a rifle bag because a rifle can be carried in it and it looks dangerous
I think these pollies need to be taught a lesson at election time when we vote so vote for the ones that treat us like people not partential
criminals
I was thinking of joining the SSAA but will hang back for awhile to see if they're really gona bat for us

Cheers

Don't know what all the fuss is about...!!!

This has been going on for many, many years and discussed numerous times on many Forums.

It's nothing new and not only applicable to NSW.

Prohibited Firearms....

It's not the police fault. Write to the politicians. They pass the laws.
Would be bloody annoying though if you bought one recently.

Totally credible and confirmed today by Andrew at Magnum Sports whos been asked to put a hold on sales, also confirmed by Justin at Horsley Park. NIOA are on the case as they're the importer and don't mind a fight with bureaucracy so it'll be interesting to see what happens. Allegedly it got started when a customer bought one and had it shipped to he local gun shop to do the registration. The gun shop wasn't sure if it was cat b, c or d or prohibited and instead of doing a little research or contacting the importer they called the registry for a categorisation. Registry somehow classified it as prohibited based on appearance resembling a military firearm. Unhappy customer is WTF??? Registry informed that these are being openly advertised and available over the counter in NSW. Registry unloads several nuggets into their manties and calls dealers asking for a halt on sales till further investigations are made. If they manage to ban the DTA then it'll open the path to banning many others based purely on appearance. NIOA, SSAA and numerous dealers are already on the case to shut down this type of stupidity by the registry.
Might restock my DTA's in timber with a conventional stock... :D

In all seriousness, if this appearance stuff is to be taken seriously, if you have it ceracoted any colour other than white, FDE, olive drab or black, surely it no longer replicates the appearance of a military weapon?

I guess I really don't care if it has to be safety orange if it just stops a silly argument. The law won't be changed, it just needs to be interpreted correctly.

this is stupid!

By the way, it is entirely the fault of police as the commissioner gets final say on rulings in situations like this.

Sorry, I disagree. If the politicians didn't pass the act/regulation in the first place the option would not exist for police commissioner to use it.

That section of the Act/regulation should be revoked.

Who wrote it? I have no idea. But often various departments are evolved. In this case police would I'm sure had input.
Who introduced it into parliament? John Howard.
Who passed it? The idiots that were elected.

If it failed to pass it wouldn't be an issue.
The people in place now inherited the act/regulations in each state.

Re: NSW bans more guns, whaaa?

It is Police Commish of the time that advises how the State regs and act should reflect the NFA. It is then put to a sitting of people who have basically no idea about what is and isn't safe or proper for firearms (the pollies/parliament). And this is the issue at hand. Regulations and interpretations of the law all come down to the Police Commish and staff.

These are not military weapons, they are just well made bolt action rifles. If they take this logic to the extreme they will ban anything that looks like a Remington 700 as they are still in service as sniper rifles in some military forces. This, extended to the Nth degree then bans almost all bolt action rifle due to military appearance. It doesn't have to go past parliament for this to happen, it is completely up to the Police.

On the other hand, the Police could just turn around and say, "these rifles are not military weapons" and the whole problem would go away overnight. So, to my mind, it is entirely a Police decision seeing they have first advised on and then interpreted the law and formulated the regulations as they choose.
