Anyone know the legalities of buying accessories like muzzle brakes off ebay from international sellers?

No dramas at all but check out the Terminator range at http://www.deltatactical.com.au/muzzle-brakes/ or search for them on Google. Somethings are best sourced locally by the time you factor in exchange rates and shipping.

For what rifle / caliber and can you link the 1 on eBay, curious to see if it'll work out cheaper.

Huge difference in price, but check the W.A rules first. No issues getting 1 in the mail in NSW but W.A is probably the least intelligent with firearms laws.

Any brake will need to be worked on by a gunsmith, to fit to your barrel, unless you getting Terminator brake for a specific model. That's $150'ish alone just there. 223 definitely kicks though, best to get a recoil pad too.

Why would a brake need a gunsmith?
If you wanted to time or index it without using shims or a locknut then you'd need machine work, but otherwise it's pretty simple to fit.

yeah Nah, not all brakes need working, shims/washers/nuts all work to index them on in the right config, seems to be a culture in Australia to pay a hell of a a lot for small bits of metal. Alls I need is a 1/2x28 thread and away we go. hell if I could find a 1/2-28 TPI Tap I would make my own 223 one. As for the 270 I am already going to have to pay for threading, so not keen on spending a fortune on an overpriced lump of steel.

more concerned with whether or not the government will be pedantic about something as harmful as a paper weight.

Well, like I said, some you can fit yourself, I have... But the majority of them are generic, one size fits all and you probably want to have it cut and filed to size, so it gels with the overall astetics.

I would recommend these, got one on my 308 fitted to my barrel measurements.

This mob were really helpful but weren't willing to sell me one because they weren't 100% happy with the slight difference in my barrel dimensions.
A sign of a good honest supplier I reckon.

I don't understand the 3mm gap you got.
5/8-24 thread is roughly 1mm thread pitch, so turn the brake two more revolutions and you'll have less than 1mm gap?
Does the brake bottom out against the muzzle?

bladeracer, yeah, that's as far as it will go if i want it perfectly aligned... More twists, and it's on an angle. I am waiting for an after-market stock for the Tikka. Once I get that, I will take another look.

Curious. Will it still make two more revolutions or is it bottoming out before that?

The nut on the wrong way that's why there's a gap.

Have a look here on how it's meant to be mounted http://terminatorproducts.co.nz/tt-brake/

Yep, does look like I have the locking nut the wrong way. Seems like this thread is getting noticed, I guess. Greg (owner) emailed about the same thing. Though, in my defence it looks just as good lol. Anyway, I'll flip it around over the next couple of days and see how we go. As always, most likely, operator error.

I was wondering if I was the only one thinking that is a ludicrous price for a muzzle brake :-)
I would love to see a test of that thing against the sub-$20 Ebay ones to see if it's twenty times more effective.

bladeracer, you're just as bad mate, with all them tactical aftermarket add-ons to your precious.

It's as expensive or as cheap as you think. If it's of value to you, then it is worth what you are willing to pay for it. Besides, you just can't put a price on happiness. And it makes me happy.

To answer the other question, whether "it reload your gun and clean it for you as well as spot game?" Don't be an idiot. Obviously, yes. I personally don't like the solvent that it uses, but it makes up in reloading consistency and game spotting.

When I buy a peripheral I do so with the intention of mounting it on several rifles, so it's very easy to decide if I can justify the price. Would I be happy with $3660 worth of muzzle brakes sitting on ten rifles in my safe? Not bloody likely! I'd rather buy more rifles with that money :-)

Tactical aftermarket add-ons?
Do you mean scopes and bipods?
I use a variety of add-ons to make my rifle better at the task I'm asking of it at the time.
I put flash hiders on to protect the muzzles, I don't much care what they look like as long as they keep the muzzle from getting plugged with mud. I've tried a few different designs in case I find one that does that job better than others.
I put lasers on when I'm changing the sighting system as it lets me zero without firing a shot.
I put bipods on so I can make more precise shots, and put my rifle down in Gippsland mud without it getting filthy while I clamber over a fence. I've also got numerous designs as I hope to find the ideal.
If I'm not using a bipod I might put a front grip on as it's more comfortable with the single-point sling.
I use brass catchers so I don't lose my brass and it stays clean.

If I had need of a rifle that was simply unshootable without a muzzle brake, then for sure I'd happily spend a grand on one to tame it. But I'd much more likely just load it back to tolerable levels or replace it with something more enjoyable to shoot. Brakes suck, but they do serve a practical purpose when they're required. I would never even consider putting one on for "tactical" asthetics.
