Ammo Storage NSW

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

Re: Ammo Storage

Ive been hearing whispers that the authorities are considering changing Ammo Storage laws and it may be along the lines of the only allowable storage medium for Ammo will be an Ammo Safe and that plastic/metal boxes won't be considered acceptable soon unless it's in transportation.
Has anyone heard this?

Not going to happen. A safe to store ammo increases the risk of catastrophic event. Amma should be stored in a container designed to release gasses easily. That means LIGHT construction.
Don't believe me? Just look at what powder is stored in.

Already require a gun safe for ammo storage in WA. Ammo storage has to equal firearm storage security.

Then the cops don't understand explosives safety. Full stop.

To clarify. They might prevent a theft but cause an explosion when it could have been a small fire.

Rule 1 for explosives is never confine.

G'day Oldbloke,
Are you trying to add common sense to Firearm Law? The best mathematician in the world can't get that equation to work!
It's like our storage, locked container in gunsafe #1 with ammo only suitable for guns in safe #2, and vice versa, is a STRICT no-no, but locked container sitting on TOP of safe, for anyone to pick up and waltz away with, Just fine and legal! Cheers.

I agree, I was merely correcting your perception that it could never happen.

That's OK Bladeracer.

All I'm saying is if you confine the ammo it's less likely to vent more or less harmlessly if it ignites.

Alrighty, so time to revive this thread... VIC specific question.

Think of Mosin ammo spam cans (something like this: https://s3.amazonaws.com/mgm-content/sites/armslist/uploads/posts/2015/10/01/4740116_01_7_62x54r_spam_can_440_rounds_s_640.jpg) . It has cartridges in it, but the thing is essentially a can, completely sealed and requires a special can opener or tools to open it.

So the questions is, does this qualify as:

(3) Any cartridge ammunition for the firearm must be stored in a locked container separate from the receptacle in which the firearm must be stored.?

For example, if I want to sit it on top of the safe, rather than wasting space in my ammo locker?

That is an interesting one :-)
I think you'll need a written answer from Firearms themselves.

I think a good lawyer would argue that it it is separate. It is not contained within the walls of the firearms container storage. There is nothing in the rules yet that sets a proximity.

Since when does locked mean secure. You can lock your ammo in a backpack as long as it’s locked.
