Ammo Storage NSW

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

Ammo Storage NSW

Post by chewbacca » 15 Sep 2017, 4:38 pm

Question about Ammo Storage:

Any preference on Ammo storage type? I am thinking of an el cheapo Bunnings safe since there aren't any min requirements for Ammo. OR

Am I better off with a dedicated Ammo Storage Box such as the Spika S1A/S2A or the Buffalo BRS20? OR

Do I not need anything that elaborate for Ammo?

Any advice would be greatly appreciate

Thanks

OK great, I noticed that the Spika purpose built ammo safes are under $100 but is key operated.
Im guessing the Bunnings El Cheapos are not worth the money?

Bunnings are not good value. You will get a bigger lokaway for same or better money.

Just been told that maybe a safe is not a good option because they are not air or water tight

Perhaps a plastic or metal ammo can may be a better option. Definitely cheaper and certainly air and water tight which I believe is important for longevity of ammo storage?

Thoughts?

Air and water tight? Are you burying this in the yard for a few decades?

Sure, but not air and water tight.
I use a pair of small Bunnings steel wall cabinets, my old pistol safe and a cheap five-gun rifle safe for ammo storage.

a cool dry place is a good idea, I am not 100% sure of NSW lockup and transporting of ammo laws but if it is similar to VIC just buy a lockable tool box as I said earlier
don't think to much into it as it is only for locking your ammo away while in transit, you really don't need it to be in a safe for transportation
and although I have had people in VIC tell me that you have to lock your ammo up in transit, it is not in the act and is total BS
I am not saying it's not a good idea but it is not law in VIC

If I remember I'll post a photo of a lockable ammo box I made for dad a 2 years ago for a year 9 wood project. As long as it has a key your good but mine is fancy as I gave it to him as a present for Christmas.

NSW is a Locked Container. Plastic or Steel Toolbox or the likes but as long as it has a lock or padlock.

Some people found out the hard way when the Police ran a random check outside a Range and even found loose ammo on the vehicle floor. Didn't end well for the Firearm Owners.

Same deal at home for storage. As long as it is in a locked container, not in your Gun Safe.

Don't do it for today, Do it to exceed what storage requirements they come up with next. In other words Do it once and do it right.

I lightweight lockable wooden box is the best. This is because it cannot possibly generate any static electricity. Also if there is a fire, sure the box will burn and the ammunition will ignite but the box will split open venting the gasses generated. The blast is therefore avoided. Gunpowder containers you'll notice are always built a fairly light materials for this reason. A lightweight metal toolbox is also good as if there's a fire it will split and vent the gas as well. Containing gasses can cause an explosion. if it is sitting on the floor concrete for example or touching the metal part of the shed in the unlikely event of static electricity it will eventually find it's way to earth. A heavy-duty safe is not a wise idea, sure it is Fireproof but if there is an ignition internally gasses will be contained, possibly causing an explosion this is much worse than if the box is able to split or vent and allow the gases to vent.
An office filing cabinet would be good or old school locker.
I use a cheap cash box to take ammo hunting. Providing it can be locked it's OK.

As as example. If ammo is dropped in a fit ( not recommending that you do this) It will ignight but the projectile will only travel a very short distance. That's why it's called "safety ammunition ".
Put it in the chamber and and very high pressures are generated and bullet travels several kilometres.

+1.

Just try to store in the coolest 8-) part of the man cave. Will be OK for years. I use a locked school locker. Powder still good after maybe 25 years. Remember the powder is in its own specialy designed container.

Locker is bolted to the steel frame so good earth and vented. Just the ticket.

Aren't all the MTM Ammo Cans Plastic.

I was given a "Zombie" AC50Z one free some time ago, never used it as it's not square, doesn't hold what I'd like with the tapered sides so back to the square metal tool box or two depending on how much ammo I need with me. Same thing with the plastic tool box, tapered sides and find one the right size to hold my smaller MTM Ammo Boxes.

It really doesn't matter, anything that can be locked will do the job legally for transport and/or home storage.

Two locks? That just sounds like money spent on a lock that I could spend on more ammo..

I use these for home storage, though I got them elsewhere for $79 on special. I wouldn't go much bigger as when they are chockers full they become quite heavy, you can fit allot in them.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/rhino-610-x ... x_p6120223

For travelling I use plastic MTM ammo cans, can be had for around $20-$30 depending on size you buy.

These supercheap ones go alright too, just wait till they come on special, usually two for $18.

I got the $8 toolbox from Bunnings and a $5 lock. Does the job for me.

Have a look at the NSW Police infosheet and website. Very clearly explained.
