Definition of Semi-Auto

Post by dpskipper » 04 Oct 2017, 9:21 am

gday,
I'm looking for the exact definition of 'Semi-Auto'/Selfloading. I don't know why the circuit judge is cat b in SA/VIC/others but cat D(?) in NSW/WA

I'm assuming its todo with each states definition of semi auto or something..? What is the definition of self loading for each state?

cheers.

I had this same conversation down at my local shop.

What is the difference between a semi auto rifle and a revolving rifle? one trigger pull is one shot same as an auto.

Semi auto uses recoil or gas to cycle plus the whole "one shot per trigger pull" thing, which gets confusing when talking about revolvers , which are basically there own thing in the eyes of the law.

In NSW if every time you pull the trigger it fires its classed as semi auto which is why those revolving cylinder guns are classed cat C

In QLD a double barrel with single trigger is legal and and a semi auto Remington 2 shot with 1 in the tube and one in the mag, no go.

I can sort of see the logic behind this. Somebody with some skill could possibly modify the semi auto to hold more ammo,no saying it makes any sense but that may be their way of thinking.

The issue is that no matter what laws are made people will still get around it Ala putting a threaded mag extension on an adler lever or straight pull 12ga

Its the old story about making rules for the biggest flogs getting around, sad really...

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies guys... Seems like the definition in some states is one pull=one shot. vs gas system...
Whats the definition of semi-auto in states that allow revolving rifles?

It's also because revolvers are double action. Technically it's still a two stage process to fire. First half of the trigger pull manually cocks the firearm. Second half of the trigger pull fires it. Obviously some states have had a closer look and said yeah, nah.

Doesn't NSW also categorize single action revolving rifles differently to other states? It was explained to me donkeys years ago that they were easily modified into handguns and that was why. From memory this was pre 96.
