Were there ever hunting/shooting TV shows in Aus?

Post by lapp » 19 Dec 2013, 8:15 am

G'day guys,

One for the older members here...

Did we ever have hunting or shooting TV shows in Aus?

I'm thinking pre-96 buyback before gun control really ramped up I guess?

I get that in the current political climate chances of someone starting a show are zip, but what about in the past?

To the best of my knowledge, never.

Short of a few seconds worth of someone taking a shot at a rabbit or something when discussing farming or something along those lines, I don't think it will ever get any attention.

Not enough of an audience I guess to justify it here, compared to the number of people and gun ownership rates in the USA.

Audience aside, it would last all of 2 minutes before the complaints started rolling in and it got canned.

There was one just a couple years back called beyond the divide. Ran on ABC from memory but I think only lasted for a couple episodes. It was advertised as a hunting show but I never got to see it so don't know if it truly was or focused more on camping and 4WDing

I'm leaning towards this one.

How about we make a show where we throw a baited hook into the bush, wait until something grabs it (anything - we can be totally non-selective about size, sex and species) then drag the animal under water and either drown it or let the injured animal go - after we kiss it of course. We can call this "land fishing". If it is good television to do it to fish, why not animals??

I am a shooter but not currently a hunter and I cant see why fishing is accepted as a past time (with plenty of TV coverage and advertising) when in all reality, hunting is far more humane, selective and controlled than fishing?

People uneducated bias.

I don't think people really see fish as "animals" for a few reasons.

a) They're not cuddly and people don't "like" them in the same way they do for a dog/cat.

b) A clean kill on a deer still has all the "icky" things people don't like - blood, exposed muscle, bone etc. Where as hooking a fish, no matter how traumatic to the fish is still pretty clean. You pull him up, unhook him, no mess, no fuss.

Not saying it's right - in fact it's obviously completely wrong - but that's the way I think it is.

As we know, people fight for causes which they believe are worthwhile, and too often these are due to emotional decisions, not intellectual ones.

If sure we've all had a conversation with someone who deplores the idea of a slaughterhouse; but still has their hamburger for lunch.

Is again animal testing; but doesn't check where their make-up comes from.

If someone shoots a bunny they're outrage; if someone shoots a rat they're happy.

The list goes on forever.

You're right though - If someone is against hunting, they should be against fishing for all the same reasons.
See you on the firing line.

Besides... fish dont have feelings, you can tell because they don't yell out when you jam a hook through them.

Nah, they just flail about wildly the second the hook goes in to be irritating. Not because it hurts...

I must say, it really s**ts me when people catch fish and just drop them on the deck to suffocate for 3-4 minutes or however long it takes.

Take 5 seconds to give them a quick flick of the knife and it's lights out.

There is one one NITV from NZ on Thursdays about 9pm or a bit later, just watch it now. Called Hunting Aotearoa

It's not bad they speak a lot in native Maori(if you can handle it) but it has sub titles, a couple of weeks back they were in Australia up north Qld

What was the content of the show like?

Any good advice or instructional stuff? Or just videos of blokes going around hunting?

I might have to start actually watching TV if there are some good hunting shows on.

I all but dismissed it years ago as all being rubbish
