Why are these single shot rifles banned in NSW?

Post by Stoney » 30 Dec 2017, 6:24 pm

Hi, just wondering why these single shot rifles are banned in The Democratic Peoples Republic of New South Wales?. According to the website they are "PROHIBITED FOR SALE IN NSW"

Ahh found it...

152 Shortened firearms

(1) For the purposes of section 62 (2) of the Act, a firearm is to be considered as having been shortened only if:

(a) in the case of a firearm that is a smooth bore shotgun or a combination smooth bore shotgun and rifle:

(i) the length of the barrel, or, if it has more than one barrel, of the longer or longest barrel is less than 45 cm, or

(ii) the length of the stock is less than 30 cm or it has no stock, and

(b) in the case of a firearm that is a rifle, not being a combination smooth bore shotgun and rifle or an air gun:

(i) the length of the barrel or, if it has more than one barrel, of the longer or longest barrel is less than 40 cm, or

(ii) the length of the stock is less than 30 cm or it has no stock, or

(iii) the overall length is less than 80 cm, and

(c) in the case of a firearm that is an air gun:

(i) the length of the barrel is less than 30 cm, or

(ii) the length of the stock is less than 30 cm or it has no stock, or

(iii) the overall length is less than 70 cm.

So in NSW, a firearm rifle must be at least 80cm long.

They make it hard dont they. You would need to put that into a table or checklist type of thing to be able to work it out. There are so many ors that there is no way I could remember all of them at once.

Are you sure that is the correct paragraph it seems more to be related to stock rifle lengths that have been shortened.

They make it easier in qld from what I understand as long as total length is over 75cm it’s a rifle, under is Cat H.

Same here in Victoria. Minimum 500mm barrel length and minimum 750mm overall length. An OEM barrel can be 400mm I think.

From the Act 62(2)
(2) The regulations may provide that certain kinds of firearms are to be considered as having been shortened for the purposes of this section only if they (or specified parts of them) have prescribed characteristics.

Important part here is "considered", ie it doesn't matter if it came OEM or not that way, if it is shorter than the regulation allows for then legally it is shortened.

As for the table, the important thing is
    Not shorter than 80cm overall
    Barrel not shorter than 40cm
    Stock not shorter than 30cm
(As you know, 30cm + 40cm = 70cm so if you had a 30cm stock, you must have at least 50cm forward of the trigger to be legal)

You would think they'd be more worried about a .50 BMG, it's ironic that I can buy one of those on my licence but not a pink single shot .22 that's a bit short.

My sentiments exactly. It's a bloody single shot .22 built for young kids to learn how to shoot. Thanks for the clarification fellas.

Little kids aren't allowed to shoot, it's too dangerous and you are training them to be killers. :sarcasm:
My 10 year old son is not allowed to shoot here but we took him to the U.S this year and he won National Sub-junior Lever-action Silhouette Title at the NRA Championships. Shove that where it don't shine Mr Shoebridge.

My (ordered) warwick WFA1 barrel is only 350mm. Maybe squeezes over 400mm with the flash hider I guess.

As long as the flash hider is permanently attached to the barrel I can't see a problem.
