Firearm license as photo ID

Post by smk » 13 Jan 2018, 9:29 pm

Hi all. Has anyone tried to use the firearm license as a photo ID/proof of age to actually buy alcohol with it?

It's a license issued under Australian Law which has your photo and signature. Perfectly valid for proving your age.

Did you get knocked back when you tried to use it?

It may technically be a legal form of ID, you will find however that many places simply won't accept it. To most people, it's not understood the level of ID hoops you have to jump through to get a firearms licence. It's just viewed as dodgy.

So by all means try, but don't be surprised if it gets knocked back.

I just went through a Commonwealth security check and they wouldn't accept it. Drivers license and passport etc and medicare card, even excepted a video easy card and rates notice, but not firearms licence.

I had AustPost accept mine for parcel collections. In retrospect, given that Vic licences have address details on them, I'll be using my drivers licence for future parcel collections. I expect AustPost will have a data breach one day. Not all states include the address on the license, so maybe that has some influence?...

It was also accepted when applying for my Passport last year.

Mine has been accepted in every circumstance where I have used it, including opening bank accounts. As the link southeast varmiter posted shows, it is Primary ID even for Federal Govt Departments, I have only once had to stand my ground and insist it be accepted and that situation was resolved by demanding to see the counter attendants supervisor, all other times no problem. I never use it as "Photo I.D./ Proof of age" etc. Only when requested by Authorised Personnel that have the authority.

I often get the "I'll just take a copy of this" rubbish when proving who I am. Ever stop to think how these copies are stored/filed, who has access to the file and how long are they kept and how are they destroyed. No WAY!

Well thats a given Ob...
If your an idiot running a large national enterprise that the country relies on, your not about to hire intelligent folk to assist you in running the enterprise...are you...!??

By hiring idiots that can only read basic scripts, they dont have as many stress claims to deal with...

Like when folk like me demand an answer as to why my item is sitting in a depot 5 mins from me for a full week when it was posted overnight express from Qld, & why something else posted to me normally also from Qld--the day AFTER the previous item, got to me, through THE SAME DEPOT, in only 3 days...

Idiots can only run an enterprise this badly if they hire idiots mate...!!!

Its unfortunate but true that employers often prefer to hire people with no experience and not particularly bright.

I've used it a couple of times as ID for 100pt ID checks, including for a mortgage application, while I was waiting on a replacement drivers licence card for one I'd lost. Raised an eyebrow or two but nothing beyond that. I've also handed it over (by mistake, wasn't paying attention when I pulled it out of my wallet) as ID for a credit card when starting a bar tab. Bar chick didn't bat an eyelid - which to be honest surprised me a bit.

Myself, I wouldn't use it as a normal form of ID ordinarily simply because I'm not a huge fan of any more people than necessary, who I don't know, knowing both my address and that I have a firearm licence. I sort of get Tom604's point though - it should be perfectly normal.

The liquor act is very specific on acceptable forms of identification. I work in the industry in QLD and have to be up to date on legislation as part of my job.
Firearms license is not an acceptable form of ID for licensed venues.

Here is an excerpt from legislation:

"Acceptable forms of ID
Five forms of ID are acceptable in licensed venues:

an adult proof of age card (e.g. Australia Post Keypass identity card)
Australian driver licence or learner permit
foreign driver licence
passport (from any country).
The ID document must be current and include a photo of the person and their date of birth."

This is relevant for QLD only.

I have a high risk license with my name and photo on it issued by the Queensland gov, it's not good enough for id. I tried at a couple of places, they would only accept a drivers licence.

The following is copied from the AusPost requirements for a police check.
Recently had to do this to renew an explosives/restricted goods licence.
It all depends on the level of scrutiny required.

I used my firearms arms licence at Australia Post to meet the I.D points criteria for my working with children check. The chick behind the counter looked at me like I was some sort of criminal. Now I wouldn't normally use my firearms licence as ID. But I needed to get the working with chrilden check sortted and it was the only card I had in my wallet that got me enough points of identification. Oh well.
