Welcome Mick.

Air rifles are a Category A firearm in Victoria. You will need a firearms license to own one.

There is no type of air rifle that does not require a license in Victoria.

There is no licensing on bows. Which I have found a great new weapon on bunnies. Just need practice.

Get yourself a firearms licence anyway, then you can have a play with all sorts of toys.
Without a licence you're restricted to Nerf guns and Super Soakers, which the rabbits might even enjoy :-)

If you have to get your gun licence anyway... I'd suggest getting a 22lr and using subsonic ammo or CCi Quiets on the rabbits rather than an air rifle. Heaps more stopping power with the rimfire 22 compared to an air rifle. I have both. The air rifle rarely gets used.

For rabbits in a large paddock a 22lr is a better choice. However, around the house and sheds, or if the property isn't very big and the neighbours are anti, an air rifle is a damn good choice.

depends in the type of rabbit shooting plus available budget. I have both PCP .22cal airgun and 22LR rimfire, the 22LR really only now gets used for foxes, and the PCP .22cal airgun is good for bunnies out to at least 50m, plus has the added benefit of significantly reduced muzzle report even compared to 22lr subsonic. I shoot a lot more rabbits with the PCP, as the noise doesn't disturb them and allows you to really clean them up in a single session.

Many pro pest controllers use PCP airguns with suppressor >> quiet, effective, discreet and gets the job done.

Last few posts are on the money.

Same amount of effort to get a license for just and air rifle as it is to get an A/B, get both so you can have whatever you like.

And a 22lr with sub-sonics runs rings around and air rifle all day long.

So you've also owned/used a reputable quality European based PCP .22cal in FAC configuration have you ? As i have one, i experience the benefits of the PCP definitively outweigh the 22LR rimfire for pest control, at least to 50m.

So as someone who has zero experience with a pcp what are the benefits over .22lr

Those nerf guns are just banned for public sale not banned for private ownership ie. you can import them yourself.
