I'm not really into shotties even though I do own a couple,,,,,,,,,,,,
But this thread from beginning till now has been wonderful,, to get the background,, sentiments,, and your obvious pride.
And, I can see definite beauty in the "old girl".

A bit late for me to weigh in on this now,,, but,, if the butt pad is "horn" as you thought in the beginning, one of the best treatments for it
is a good drink of olive oil rubbed in every 4-6 months.

Thanks DJ. I am very proud of what I and Gerty have achieved. My next target will be an adult fox, followed by possibly a goat or deer.
I rub BLO into the horn parts as per instruction from Allan Vaisham. The leather recoil pad is mainly there to extend length of pull and protect the original horn pad when I'm loading and such

What if GrandPa's shotgun is from a well known London maker - Henry Atkin from Purdeys - Now part of Atkin, Grant and Lang - whose guns start at about $100,000 or so. Ours is not in that category but it's still an Atkin, over 100 years old, hammerless ejector, but wears Damascus steel barrels chambered for 2 1/2 inch black powder shells. This was our "farm gun" and wasn't babied. it is a joy to shoot with appropriate cartridges and used to drop a few jaws when I used it at Field and Game events many years ago at Houghton Wineries. Dad is 101 years old and has just got his FAL renewal with a new identity card renewal and I don't know how he'll go signing inside the "box" that he can't see. We want to keep this historial firearm in the family.

The only markings on it are " Grundmann in Stendel " so I think from memory that's in Belgium. I've got an AyA that's kinda special from what I've been told though. Your dads gun sounds bloody awesome !

Another one this morning, this time a 1½oz load of 2s over 2½ drams of Wano PP. Dropped like a stone at 20m on the run,but the extra powder charge is opening the pattern up too much for my liking

Now that you mention it Big Pete, can you put up a pic of its shot pattern ?
I've sorta been wondering all along what sort of pattern it throws.
