Sulun ST 603 No proof marks

Post by NickRigby » 27 Jun 2026, 10:31 am

I have a Sulun ST 603 with a factory fitted Auslof system. I bought it new last year. It shoots really low, so I took to my gunsmith to look at options for a higher rear sight or lowering the high blade front sight.

He thought a picatinny could be a possibility but as it would need to go on the chamber, he wanted to check wall width for tolerances. As part of that process, he measured the depth of the holes which mount the side magazine and expressed significant concern. Although drilled into the chunkier block at the base of the chamber, his view was that their depth still took them dangerously close to the inner wall of the chamber, perhaps <1mm

He then looked for proof marks and couldn't find any, anywhere on the gun.

Naturally, no work was done on the gun.

I've written to Sulun and the dealer I bought it from. Nothing back from Sulun yet. Dealer got back and said as far as he knew, Turkish guns are proofed in Turkey before export, but said to wait what Sulun said.

A few questions for the brains trust:

Anyone else have a Sulun Auslof? Thoughts ?

Anyone know the story about whether Turkish guns are adequately proofed before export to Australia?

If that's a No, how are they verified to meet Australian standards?

If I have to return it under warranty, I'm curious as to how that'll affect the new NSW firearms limits. I currently have 6, which I'll be reducing to 4 when the dust settles, and the Sulun was going to be one of those. I guess no problem if I just get a refund, but if it's a replacement, stuffed if I know how that would work....

Australia has no standards, we rely on International Proof Houses to do their job. Turkish guns are passed Proof according to individual makers submissions and the fact you can't find a Proof mark on a Sulun means nothing at all about any other Turkish manufacturer.

Just to clarify, Turkey is not a member of CIP and does not have a Proof House as such, individual makers do in-house proof testing as part of their manufacturing licence under Law 5201 and the TSE (Turkish Standards). Proof Marks may be added to export firearms where such marks are required, so on the lug underneath the barrel on a Sulun is common if it was destined for European countries who are CIP members or to SAAMI members like the USA. You would not be entitled to claim a Warranty return in Australia simply for a lack of such marks but the Importer may look after you for good customer relations. Any other Sulun you get may be exactly the same though.

WTF is an Auslof system?
Does it make it go faster?

An auto load magazine, opening the action causes a carrier to swing across with the next cartridge then you simply close the action and fire. Can carry 5+ depending on jurisdiction, no handling of cartridges (needs to be an ejector gun of course) juat open, close, shoot. Based on a very old system called Alof.
