Double barrel, side by side, over-under, semi-automatic, straight-pull and lever action shotguns.

Cheap, short (legal), side by side shotgun

Post by wictor » 14 Oct 2014, 1:39 pm

Hi guys,

You're talking to someone who knows nothing about shotties and just wants one for some fun.

I'd like a side by side without a real long barrel.

You know the short cowboy styles ones? Do they have a proper name?

Just cheap and reliable, nothing fancy required :)

Suggestions? Thanks.

Coach guns are what they use in Western Action. They are inexpensive, Google is a good place to start in Western Action firearms suppliers.

Boito and stoeger both make cheap coach guns

Certainly not perfectly made but will certainly do the job

Was it just for a bit of fun or for hunting?

"coach gun" thanks Cavok.

Combat_wombat,

Fun, maybe a bit of hunting for rabbits or foxes.

No bird shooting, deer slugs anything like that.

The Stoeger... to be fair I've never used one but have handled in the shop.

The stock on their 'double defence' shotgun... so bad. It was like a spray painted piece of rough timber.

Not a SXS but this thread on the Aust Hunt Forum is interesting:

Where the fellow has cut down a single shot, silver soldered on some rough rifle sights and uses sporting clay rounds with the shot taken out and the Lee 1oz cast slug in them.

These are his loads, using melted wax to hold the slug in the case:

Yeah one of my mates bought the sxs double defence and the stock is awful but that's why he bought it. He pretty much transports it by tying it to his tow ball with a bit of wire.

That's pretty close. I'm pretty keen on the double barrel TBH though.

No real reason though... Just because.

Yeah same here. Can anyone give some model names to consider. Hammerless, double trigger, with a decent finish ?

I had a Stoeger I used it when I ran bear bait I killed a few rabbits with it.

It was a real lite gun it was nice for carrying all day but kicked when you shot it.

It was imp and mod and I did shoot some clays with it.

It did pattern OK but each gun can be different so check it and some loads will pattern better
