GDay Shooters
Quick question on chokes.
I have the SHS 12g 20’ Straight Pull that came with 5 chokes
I didn’t get a manual with the gun so can you please tell me which choke is best for slugs
I have shot them out of the cylinder choke but wasn’t game go tighter.
Does it get dangerous if we go down to modified and improved modified then full choke?
Cheers.

I would stick with Cylinder.
I don't think it gets dangerous, it just risks damaging the choke or barrel threads.
I've been considering getting a rifled choke to try it with slugs.

I've shot many many slugs through full chokes. Provided they are "rifled" slugs they are fine

most manufacturers will warranty up to half choke for slugs but saying this it depends on what part of the world your shotgun was made to how tight your chokes are
eg. Italian chokes are usually tighter than British

If your worried just disasemble a round and see if the slug fits down the barrel and past the choke OK.

Given that the fins on most slugs are specifically designed to crush down to provide a good gas seal there is no need to waste time and good ammo pissing about pulling them apart to see if they fit through a choke because they are designed to be crushed to fit.

I've fired several hundred slugs through full choke with no sign of problems.

The fins aren't designed to form a gas seal, just to provide a snug fit in the bore and to reduce pressure as the slug goes through the choke.

The gas seal that follows provides the gas seal

Bugger me, you're right. I hate it when I pontificate in error, good on ya :D

They are designed to crush to fit though, so I was nearly right

I was curious how rifled slugs would go on buffalo but the guide claimed they would bounce off. They would not penetrate as well as 45/70 but I doubt they would bounce off

People have shot buff with slugs before. The biggest problem is that most are soft lead and hollow based so that they flatten out as much as possible, which isn't great for penetration. Theres a few types that are a bit more solid. One in particular strikes me as being good big game medicine. Svarog make a paradox slug that looks pretty s**t hot to me

I know a farmer who shot a bull buff with his semi auto shotgun from 50 in the forehead and laid down very quietly for a while praying while the buff was jumping up and down looking for him, he also successfully neck shot plenty of others but no more head shots,
I told him to sink a ball bearing into the slug as he made it for penetration or buy a rifle

If you hit the shoulder bone I figured the lead would flatten out.Be scary having the bull looking for you.Maybe best to use big game bullets for big game

Have you tried putting a "wanted" add on used guns?
