410 options

Post by Shootermick » 29 May 2019, 7:15 am

Hi all,
Just after an under and over 410 and wanting opinions and options about different brands. Don’t want to pay more than $8/900 ish, so it rules out Beretta and the more high end guns. Stoeger and Boito keep coming up when I do a search, but I don’t know much about them, other than the fact they fit into my price bracket.
Cheers.

G’day Mate, I cant offer any brand suggestions but I’ve gotta question? What do you want to go for a 410 for?
I’m thinking about getting a shotty as well and don’t know much about it.
I only know about 12g ( and I don’t even know much about those!).

G'day Shootermick,
Stoeger and Boito are the same thing, both made by Amantino in Brazil. they are low cost, solid and reliable entry level guns which will serve you well until you feel like upgrading. They also make a 20g if you want to step up a little without going to 12g. Armed are a Turkish maker, at the same level as Boito etc, making good reliable field guns which do the job at a price that suits the budget conscious hunter. I feel you would be well served by either, and as bigpete said, take your licence and go to a couple of shops and try the guns for feel and mount, happy shooting.

I’ve got a 12 gauge, and if you’re only getting one shotgun, that’s what you get, under and over, in my opinion anyway. But as for the 410, it’s something that my wife can happily shoot, and as my kids grow up they can learn with it. It will fill a gap in the safe and just be more for fun than anything else, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But for out and out shooting and hunting, 12 gauge all day every day.

Well a 28 gauge is considered superior to the .410 according to the Poms. Low recoil - better performance . And If anyone knows shotguns its the Poms. I'm looking at getting one myself.

Something like this - https://www.ozgunmart.com.au/12-gauge-t ... educe~2916 could be a cheap way to try out 28G for recoil anyway. I know the short adapters are sub par for patterns.

a few years ago I bought a stoeger double barrel 410 for my daughter
she wont let me get rid of it even though she grabs my 12 gauge off me all the time
I paid around $400 and recon it's good value
this is her first shots with it at 12 years old :drinks:

I have a Stoiger in 410 . It is a nice little under /over that has rolled a few bunnies and the odd snake around the yard. I bought it for the wife and it is simple and reliable. Compared to the weight of a 12g it is like a sports car. So light it swings fast and a real pleasure to shoot. I do reload for it as ammo is not cheap.
Only thing I find a little off is that it is choked ful and full so a snake at 4m is pretty much a rifle shot, so do not let them get to close. For kids and the wife they are fun and easy to shoot. Like any firearm, use it to its limitations and it does a good job.
Swaging your own projectiles is the ultimate in flexibility.

G'day Bills Shed,
You can ream one barrel to bring it to modified, or even cylinder if you want. Better to have an experienced shotgun smith do it, but a good fitter/machinist or toolmaker could also do it, Cheers.

The link just went straight to the used guns site. Which one were you looking at? Was it the H & R stainless job?

Rifled slugs in a 410 shotgun have similar grunt to pistol rounds in a rifle apparently

Not sure if you’re still looking ... only just noticed this post. Had a Stoeger ordered at a certain gun shop in east brissie maybe 3 years ago, but somehow they messed up the order and it turned out an Uzkon under over was awaiting me. Made in Turkey, as are a fair few other reasonable-for-$ shotties. Anyway I accepted it even though I would have preferred the 26” Stoeger, that somehow looked nicer in the pics.

No regrets though ... those 28 inch barrels swing like the sports car that somebody else here described the lightweight guns as. I taught my tall 12 year old how to shoot clays with this gun, and I kid you not, he is spooky good at it. Seems to nail more with it than I do with the 12G! Have accumulated a massive range of ammo in the caliber from 9’s right up to 5 and 3 X SG loads and solids. So we’ve got all contingencies covered. About the only regret is that choke and ejector models in the sub calibres ... especially in .410 are few and far between ... and big $.

HOWEVER ... I saw an ad in one of the bigger gun shops recently for possibly an ATA from memory, that came with no fewer than 5 chokes and ejectors for a few $ above your price range. Had to give my eyes a rub to make sure I was seeing right!! I have an ATA in 20 gauge and am pretty happy with it. In fact I’d probably even consider the .410 as well to add to the collection if my memory was correct. So that may be an idea for you to research ...

Hell ... I’d probably even consider selling you the Uzkon and grabbing the ATA if its asking price happened to be out of your range ... assuming I can pry it out of my lads hands ... !!!
