Budget coach gun!

Post by Jakotay22 » 11 Oct 2019, 9:14 pm

Been looking into purchasing a coach gun recently for some fun plinking on the farm. I've heard a couple good things on the stoeger coach.

Would love some opinions on brands (12g side by side preferred)

I have also seen some boito coach guns going cheap.

Thanks :)

If you like the Stoeger, definitely get one.

I've had a Stoeger s/s coach for about 10 years, it's still my favorite workhorse

If you go that route then make sure it is proofed for smokeless powder. A lot of old hammer guns aren't. They are still quality firearms but built before smokeless powder was common.

I've been tempted to get another stoeger.

I like the blued, stainless receiver.
I'd probably order it with a single trigger and flush screw in chokes

If two cylinder bores are what you want this would be the way to go.

I bought a Zafer for $580, nice Turkish walnut, solid shottie . I’ve put about a 1000 shells through it with no problems.

I bought a Lucchini for $180, cost $70 to have the barrels shortened to 20" by a gunsmith. As bigpete said, buying an older gun and having it shortened can be a money saving option, but for convenience stick to modern guns like Baikal, Lucchini, Boito etc who all have both boxlock and hammer options, Cheers.

I am new to shotguns and slightly confused in terms of chokes.

Is something like a Stoeger coach available with screw in chokes?
With the very limited knowledge I have, I thought hey were permant.

Thanks :)

It's legally safer that way. I imagine the bead was relocated too.
I'd probably pay a smith as well, even though I could probably make a whole shotgun from scratch. :drinks:

Yes, up until recently I had a Stoeger Coach Gun Supreme, which came with screw in chokes. You can buy the regular coach gun, which comes with fixed chokes. The 'standard' coach gun also comes with different timber and no recoil pad.

Mine was good fun, VERY handy seeing how short and light it was, but recoil was pretty stout with hunting loads, and I found that for some reason the action on mine would stiffen up (as in it was very difficult to open the action for about 20 seconds) if you shot hunting loads through it.

Bloody good fun for smashing clays though.

My stoeger was stiff to open after shooting heavy rounds. It turned out to be the rough finish in the chamber.Unlike real brass shot shells, the new brass coated steel shotgun cartridges would expand and grab.

A couple of laps with a fine brake hone in the chambers had them smoothed out and the problem never showed up again
