Shotgun Help

Post by Blu333 » 19 Mar 2014, 11:33 am

Long time reader first day joiner,

I'd like a hand picking my first shotgun.

TBH the only thing i have decided on is O/U, synthetic stock and 12 gauge. I'm not really picky about brand. It will be used for the occasional day at the range and be accompanying me to most of my hunting trips. As its my first shotgun i don't really want to invest thousands into it either. I'm also open to options of replacing the stock.

cheers guys.

G'day Blu.

If you're keeping costs down synthetic stock will save you a couple of hundred bucks.

Stuff like the Beretta silver pigeon and that are reeeal nice, but you're obviously paying a lot for the engraving and walnut and brand and the rest.

Stoeger have a decent rep for the price from what I've read?

They offer just about every combo too I think. side-by-side, over-under, blued, stainless, wood, synth... You can get everything with everything.
Whatever you do, don't look at the mayonnaise...

Definitely big money can be spent on shotties.

The nicer stuff like Miroku and the Silver pigeons all start at $3,000 from memory and go up from there to 6-7 and more... To rich for me.

One complaint I have about the Stoeger is some of their stocks are terrible! I think it's the Double Defence that has the black painted wood stock?

It's like you painted a bit of raw timber from Bunnings with a spray can :/

Their synthetic and walnut stuff is better though.

Budget is around that $1500 -$1800 mark, It will either be slung or on a rack on a ATV or trail bike. Obviously not investing to much because i expect it to get knocked around a fair bit. Thanks guys.

Stoeger are basically Boito aren't they? I punted a second hand Boito SXS around to two seasons as a rough gun but when the stock cracked bought an unused AYA SXS for $400 instead and am far happier. I also have a Silver Pigeon under and over that is kept mainly for sporting clays but I am almost as good with the SXS but it is full and modified fixed choke and a bit on or off close up.

Shotguns are one area that I think wood is far better than plastic.

What's a Lanber worth these days? Plenty of blokes I know have had them for years without an issue, I had one for ten years without a problem.

Edit: try this- http://usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=30755 I presume it has 3" chambers and screw in chokes, essential if you wish to shoot steel shot at any stage(and lets face it lead won't be about forever)

Hey mate,

What about a Webley & Scott?

I just got 1 and am very happy. My mate bought 2 of them as he has a Beretta and didn't want to damage it duck shooting.

We are both very happy got it for $900 down from $1,100.

Considering your intended use and budget I see no point in looking at new fancy shotties given their price as good ones are costly. Stay away from Stoegers, Boitos etc as they are Brazilian rubbish.

The best place for you to look for good quality ones for your purposes well within your price range is on Usedguns, eg Winchester 101 $1500 along with a host of others all within your price range including a new triple barrel Akkar $1750.

This is maybe what you really need sitting in the ATV rack for $1000 :D
