Are you after something traditional or more modern because the Akkar Churchill XM12 Synthetic Shotgun With Rails 12G is my pick for best modern over and under. You can compete with clays but take it to the range and shoot paper and you will get a lot of attention from other Shooters because of all the modern features on it.
And it comes in just under budget at $1435.

Without hesitation - look at second-hand. You will find plenty of good quality guns in that price range with plenty of life left in them.

Hi!

I was looking at an Akkar Churchill (LH) but couldn't get one when my PTA came through so I bought an ATA686SL. Best entry level gun out there IMHO. Backbored barrels, mechanical triggers, extended and polished forcing cone, 5 year warranty. I found it to be corrosion free-though I did clean it after every shoot. I put about 20k rounds through it over 5 years and it took it all- eventually one or the ejectors wore down as the metal quality is the failing of all the entry level guns. It was fixed free under warranty.

If I was starting over I would do the same- or I would get a 2nd hand Beretta 686. Plenty of those for sub $2k.

Don't get a field gun if you plan to shoot clays- the safety will drive you nuts!
Regards,

Jarhead

What's this about?
What are "field guns" precisely, and how is the safety bothersome?

If I'm thinking of the same thing I think he means how some shotguns go on safe every time after they are opened. I could see that becoming a problem.

Yep,

Field guns seem to have a safety mechanism that goes safe every time you break the gun. Bad thing to have (with a bad memory) in a clay competition. Good thing to have in the field.

I bought a cheap Lanber back in the day, its perfect for a $600 gun, was completely blemish free and like new when I got it... still goes strong, albeit a bit more scratched up.

My son has taken an interest in shooting and purchased an Akkar Churchill o/u without ever having fired a shottie. I haven’t used a shotgun since I was a kid (we had claytarget as a sport when I was at school) but I am an ex-armourer and was very impressed with this gun for the price he paid.
We have been to the range at Belmont a couple of times and put about 150 rounds through it. I like it a lot and will be taking up shooting again after after a 35 year hiatus. I would be very happy with an Akkar Churchill (adjustable stock) for use as an all rounder.
