Hi all,

I'm interested in getting my first shotgun.

Any thoughts on the Escort 12g Synthetic?

Just wanting it for pigs/hunting and target shooting.

Any other suggestions for around the $1k area?

Cheers,

Have a look at a Franchi.

They are made by Beretta, had one in my hands at a club day and was really impressed for the price think they were a $1,000

Came with a full set of chokes.

I've gotta say I found the synthetic stock on the Escort to be pretty unflattering. As far as synthetics go it wasn't high on the list for me.

Pretty sure the same thing in their Turkish Walnut is only about $50 more brand new.

It will get a bit scuffed but that doesn't really matter. Bit of oil as part of your cleaning routine and it will last just as long as the synthetic stock.

I'm not in a dissimilar situation to OP: first shotgun and want one that can do it all (doesn't everyone?). Mine will be much more of a target gun with a rare hunt thrown in for fun. I've been looking at a new Beretta 686 silver pigeon for around $2100 or pay slightly ($2400) more for a second hand 687 silver pigeon V with the finish nearly completely gone but otherwise in really good condition. Anyone got any opinions on this? Thanks for your help.

Oww yeah, the 687.

They're about $4,500 new from memory, can't argue with $2k off.

I'm looking at a Fabarm Elos trap for my first serious trap gun. After fitting, it felt great and comes up to the point well. A tad lighter than some of the more expensive guns but I don't want a heavy gun either. I believe it will do for many years of busting clays.

I bought a Mossburg Thunder Ranch U/O with 20" barrel as I wanted something small and cheap cause it'll have a rough life. Damn thing firing Federal Solids kicks like a mule, makes my 50 feel like an air rifle. Spent 5 days up bush last week, put 68 rounds through the 50, 60 through my 338 and another 40 through the 22-250 and the only one to leave a bruise was the damn shotgun. Nice, cheap shotty but the recoils a bitch....

I've had a few peeps at the range tell me the churchill is quite good. i just preferred the lighter Webley & Scott... after a couple of hundred rounds at the clays, the weight difference really comes in handy!

and don't let anyone tell you the recoil will be heavier on the lighter webley, cause there isn't any difference ;-)

Trust me if you are going to put a few hundred down range regularly a well fitted(fitting being as important as weight when it comes to felt recoil) heavier gun will be appreciated in the long run.

i'm new to clays, so i don't know what i don't know... but.... i do know what feels good so far and that involves spending a fair few Sundays putting 150-200 through her each session.

this is my first 12g. my plan was always to get a budget/entry level, make sure i like it, then pass it on to the wifey and get a fully fitted silver pigeon (or something of a similar ilk).. eventually..

Gotta say I've never got the whole thing of people always comparing Mercedes to Holden and saying how much better they are than everything else.

They're 3 times the price of a Commodore, they'd damn well wanna be better so I don't know what people are bragging about.

Lets see 'em compare one to a Porsche :D

Funny, I shot trap on the weekend for the first time at the local club. I shot 22/25 with my $125 wobbly Boito sxs with bolts holding the stock together and then shot a 20/25 then 22/25 with a chaps $4k Beretta. The Beretta did feel nicer though. Must be the extra $3875's worth.lol
