Which was the pick of the Winchester single shot 12 gauges?
The 37, 37A or 370? Which had an ejector?
I know they’re old now and cheap but I’m thinking about buying one to restore.
Cheers.

G'day Shootermick,
They were all ejectors, the M37 was US made from 1936 to 1961, the M370 and M37A were Canadian made by Cooey with the 37A introduced in 1973. The 37A had a nicer stock option and would be my pick, Cheers.

Thanks No1.
What about the hammer and action opening lever? Some models have the hammer in front and some behind. Is one spot better than the other?

The Model 37 had the hammer behind the opening lever, the 370 & 37A was in front. I had an early Model 37 and a Stevens Model 94 with the hammer in front. I think it is just what you get used to using, I still have the Stevens but would happily buy another Winchester if I didn't have so many other things to eat my gun budget. Cheers.

Just always wanted a single shot 12 ga! But don’t want to break the bank. And just a project, if it’s a bit rough I’ll see if I can tidy it up with a bit of a restore.

OK. Just that 90% are full choke.
Not the greatest for running game. As long as you are aware of that.

We have a 37A (Cooey) in 20G and, yes, it's full choke. Not what I'd call a high level gun but it shoots and does the job when required. "Functional" is probably a more accurate description. Wood is very plain, some parts are alloy, some are plastic. It works and would make a decent gun for a farmer worried about snakes but that's where I'd leave it.

I used a 37A (1st gun) for DTL as a schoolboy. Did just as well as the farm boys with their more expensive U/Os. Schoolboy shoots were all single shot IIRC.
