12g and rifle Combination

Post by dnardy » 01 Jul 2021, 12:05 pm

Hi all,
When whistling foxes I often find myself in a situation where I have a rifle in my hand when a shotgun would be better, and vice versa.
I'm interested in a combo gun but only ever see .410 or 20 gauge, so 2 questions:

1. Does anyone have or know where i can find a combination gun with the shotgun component being 12G

2. or, is 20G plenty for foxes?

Cheers!

CZ do a 12G/rifle combo but the calibres are pretty stout for fox - staring at .308 and getting bigger.

https://www.facebook.com/cleaverfirearm ... 501345189/

Baikal does similar starting with 12G/.223 and upwards.

If you want to spend more then Merkel and other European brands might be worth a look.

I'm pretty sure you will find others if you google it. Second hand might be worth looking at.

If you can find one, a Savage 24f is 223/12g

Merkel do combination guns in 223/12g as well as other calibres.

Chiappa do a 22lr/12g survival rifle called the M6

20g would be plenty for whistling foxes hey.
My thoughts have gone down this route MANY times. The biggest issue I see is the sights....ideally,you don't want any for use with the shotgun, whereas you'll definitely want a semi decent magnification scope for the rifle. So I reckon probably the best bet would be say a 20g/222 or the like with a 1-8 power scope, preferably in QD mounts. Although,if you can get a scope that low they're probably not super necessary. Other problem is one of regulation,I have heard the savages are poorly regulated yet they probably offer the better combination of calibres at a reasonable cost.

I should qualify that. Great combination, but no matter what you do your sights are a compromise. Red dot or reflex would work I guess. To a point

2. Is a 20G plenty for foxes  I have a 20G/Rifle combo plus a few 20G shotguns. They kill just as good as some big 42G BB kicker.

I have aimpoints for all my combos and I have 1.5-6x42 or 1-5x24.

I've shot foxes, goats, sambar , fallow well past 200m with the 6X no problems.

Here's a video on a combo. Hitting clays on 1.5X and shooting sub moa at 200 yards.

Check out TPS. They offer a 410 combination gun with choice of 22LR, 22 Mag, 22 Hornet or 357 Magnum rifled barrel.

I'd be sorely tempted by either the 22 Hornet or 357 Mag combo with a red dot sight.

Yeah I thought there were a few options including chiappa, savage and bergara. I was looking into it so I could add something unique to my small collection because my safe has limited space left. Getting 2 in one also saves on space.

Yes actually looks like they are from the same
mould with some minor differences. I started comparing after I sent my first message. I do like the look of the little badger for the money or even the savage 42 but I guess neither are precision engineered, just convenience factor.

I see you found one. Great combination gun, just beware it's a 1:14 twist when selecting ammo.

Also check the regulation when you get it.

I will check the twist Fionn, from my research it could be anywhere from 1:14 to 1:9, Quoted from another site:
To possibly help in sorting fact from fiction within this topic, I have attached info from the horse's mouth, namely Savage Arms catalog from the year 2000, which includes the Savage 24F in it's contents, showing the rate of twist at 1 in 9" for the 223 Rem.

But I'll check it. The previous owner achieved the tight group in the picture with Federal 55 grain soft point, which would be great. But it's a fox gun and lighter bullets will suffice too. I do pefer heavier bullets though you never know what's going to cross your path.

Yeah the twist rate can be all over the place depending on the age and which Savage (owner) it was when made etc

Just wanted to give you a heads up if you where having problems with heavier projectiles.
