410 reloading

Post by 17Dave » 02 Sep 2023, 10:51 pm

I'm looking into 410 reloading.
Why does ADI only list a 1200fps load with 2205 and a 1/2oz charge.
It lists a higher powder charge with an 11/16oz charge and higher pressure.
Does anyone load the 1/2 Oz charge faster using 2205.
Cheers

AR2205 is IMR4227 in the US so you can try looking at data there. A quick Google does show it being a pretty popular powder for the .410. I did see some comments that it's on the slow side if you're chasing velocity, talking of 1150fps, maybe 1200fps tops - at standard pressures, but I don't know that there's any reason to try to push for more than 1200fps out of it. If you can push it harder and it still patterns nicely then it may be worth it.

I could be wrong here but I thought AR2205 was the same identical powder as Hogdon H4227 not IMR4227 which is close in burning rate but not an ADI made powder . I think IMR4227 was originally made in Canada .

Pushing small round ball faster than say abt 1200 is a bit pointless. If you push it to say 1300, by the time they are both at about 45 yards both are doing roughly same speed. So you gain very little at distance. Faster you push them the faster they slow down. Of course you gain up closer.

Above are just rough figures and I reckon pellet size/weight will effect the results too.

I agree 1200 fps is plenty out of a 410 and you shoudl keep the load a pleasure to shoot not a punishment .

I did try to find the MSDS for H4227 but it was discontinued some years ago. From what I've been able to gather H4227 was discontinued and renamed as IMR4227 (made by GD in Canada), and checking load data for various cartridges with IMR4227 data and AR2205 data gives me identical load data. I'm confident it's the same powder.

I will take your word for it . That's one of the problems with Hogdon he likes changing things around . He started in a caravan out in a big paddock , packaging up Military surplus powders for re-loaders .

Any quicker than 1200 with reloads for the 410 will blow the patern out. Wad design for light loads at high speed is critical. The wads in 7/8 or 24g trench loads are very different in performance to standard 12g wads. You will also find that choke selection is critical the lighter the load is. I was a competitive trap shooter for years and used 7.5 1200's top and bottom and 1250's in the top on windy days.
