Something similar to pump action 12 gauge Mossberg

Post by Point223 » 05 Aug 2014, 3:49 pm

Hi everyone,

Finally installed my safe and i'm out looking to purchase a rifle. I have a Category A, B license. I wanted to buy a pump action 12 guage mossberg, but that's out of the question due to license restriction. Anything similar i could get with my current license? Any suggestion for a rifle that i can reload quickly, is powerful, and fun to shoot?

Your replies are much appreciated.

Thanks

You could go a lever action shotgun. IAC make some pretty good ones that you can usually pick up around the $900 mark.

If you wanna go for a fast shooting rifle then a pump action like the remington 7600's or a lever action rifle would be your best bet.

What do you wanna do with the rifle?

Remington make some nice looking pump action centrefires. The ten round mag in the old SMLE can be emptied pretty quickly with a well oiled bolt and a bit of practice. I'd personally be checking usedguns for a nice second hand lever action that won't break the bank. A Marlin lever in 45-70 fast and powerful enough for ya? :P

I don't think I can own a pump with my Category of license. it's A and B. In NSW does that allow you to own a pump or a lever?

I'm not aware of any ruling for not having pump/lever rifles. As long as you have the correct license grade for the cartridge I think you're okay.

Sounds like a good lever action to me ;)

Thanks heaps guys! Remington 7600 in a .223 or Remington 7615 in a .223 are going to be my choices. Any ideas what are the likelihood of them jamming? and are they easy to clean?

Cleaning a pumps a little trickier than a bolt action because you can't remove the bolt to open the action up for you. It's not hard though.

You can reach everywhere you need to through the ejection port and by dropping the magazine out. Get in their with a toothbrush or whatever you use.

Keep it clean and there is no reason to expect jams. Between oil and dust a little gunk will build up over time but if you leave it to build up that's your fault, not the pump action

Enjoy the new shooter mate :)

Remington 7615 in a .308 OR .223

Still mulling that choice over.

Comes down to what you're hunting then. Varmints? Game?

.308 will let you hunt everything so that's a plus over the .223. If you're only after foxes and rabbits though it's a waste.

More recoil and more expensive ammo then you need. So what are you hunting?

Have you fired either BTW? Could be good to get to the range with a mate or ask a fellow shooter there for a go on either rifle to give you an idea too.

I want to hunt anything and everything, so a 308 would be a better option I guess. Haven't fired either. and It'll be hard to try them before buying as I don't know anyone in Sydney. I can't see anyone at the range allowing me to use their gun. Is there a test the gun before you buy like in the states ranges around sydney?

You'd be surprised mate.

I've asked half a dozen blokes at the range if I could have a shoot of their rifle if it was something interesting.

Also had a couple of blokes offer after seeing me eyeballing their rifles.

I've given half a dozen guys a shot of mine too. There will be a few SOBs who wouldn't let you but for the most part we're a decent bunch ;)

I'd agree.

There are minimum legal calibres for Deer (.270w and up so .308 is fine, but .223 is no good.)

And for thick skinned, boned or otherwise tough critters like pigs and goats and .223 isn't going to be ideal.

.308 it is! I'm not going to hover around the range like an idiot waiting for someone to take mercy on me and let me shoot their rifle. I'll buy the .308 and 100 bullets sit at the range and shoot till they run out!
