Why do shotguns have proof marks but not rifles?

Double barrel, side by side, over-under, semi-automatic, straight-pull and lever action shotguns.

Why do shotguns have proof marks but not rifles?

Why do shotties have proofs but not rifles?

Am I correct in thinking this?

Proof loads are fired in rifles to check they are sound. I assume that is what you are talking about?

Rifle proof loads tend to be higher pressure than standard loads.

I think he's talking about proof marks.

They may be on all kinds of firearms depending on the manufacturer.

But we're all over the place here

Confirm Ade and we'll sort it out.

Looking at his list of firearms, I think it's "Proof Marks" he is talking about.

That side of the world and quality makers use "proof marks" ... Not saying there is anything wrong with say Sako/Tikka but they don't have "proof marks" but are quality firearms.

Don't know the history behind them or a list of who does and who doesn't.....nor why.

Proof as in Proof marks where a firearm is tested with a much larger load than it would typically fire to test integrity before being sold to the public. This is then stamped on the gun. It is done in shotguns and lawfully should be done after and barrel moderations

They may not have proof marks on Tatooine but to import firearms into Australia they definately do have to be marked as tested.

Look a bit closer at your Tikka.

Your replacement barrels may not have proof marks but this is another issue entirely.

Yeah, okay. I put on the high power specs and found the little "Lion Head" from the Finnish Proof House.

Not as obvious as others, especially like BSA with a multitude of markings including a "pressure rating".
