Can you bulge/damage a shotgun barrel with shot

Double barrel, side by side, over-under, semi-automatic, straight-pull and lever action shotguns.

Can you bulge/damage a shotgun barrel with shot

Post by sneaker » 02 Feb 2015, 3:16 pm

Is it possible to repeat a situation like not cleaning the grease out of a rifle and bulging the barrel with a bullet with shot in a shotgun?

I assume you can with a slug which is flush with the barrel all the way. Asking about shot specifically here though which has some give and flow.

I assume as well that the plastic sabot would give way if it encountered a blockage before the barrel would.

What's the verdict?

As stated, yes. I too have seen the result. The bottom barrel had a almost perfect shot dimple under the barrel.

It does but there is give an flow both ways. A barrel is not immune to this.

The shot will obviously give and move more, but even if 99% of that energy is transferred with the shot and only 1% is absorbed by the barrel you've still got a bulged barrel.

This are moving so fast and with such energy in firearms there only needs to be an obstruction for fraction of a fraction of a second and the barrel will have to absorb some of it.

I see.

I don't suppose you remember the cause exactly? If it was determined that is.

Even with dimple or bulge does it effect a shotgun much?

Being that, you know, it throws out a scattered pattern anyway. Not an individual projectile your trying to use accurately.

I might be able to get a photo for you if my mate hasn't had his rebarreled his.

He bulged a barrel about a month ago with some steel shot. I'll see if it's not too late when I speak to him next.

Hehehehe...I managed to enlarge the last 4" of an old Bentley when I was 9, I fell over walking across the paddock and manage to plug the right barrel with some dirt. I didn't realise it till pulling the trigger on some galahs and getting knocked on my arse but at least I got the dirt out :)

I haven't seen it myself, he just told me over the phone.

Bulged "the end of it" was the words he used so sounding like.

Waiting to here back on a photo still.

In older guns when you first use steel shot it is quite common to get a pressure ring about where the choke starts to narrow off, the barrel can be opened out to prevent this but naturally has to be done before steel shot is fired.
