Shotgun 101

Post by aaronjo » 06 Aug 2015, 11:02 pm

Hi guys,

With all the recent drama regarding the Adler lever action it just got me thinking, how many of you own shotguns and for what purpose?

I know there are the skeet, trap and clay shooters who go through thousands of shots a year owners. They will use the high end, quality walnut, engraved masterpieces like Berettas.

The hunter who uses them for rabbits, foxes, pigs, etc. I'm assuming these owners would want something less pretty but more functional like an Akkar Churchill.

Then the Adler appeared and all of a sudden there was a mad rush to obtain a 7 shot shotgun that would kinda replace the pump action that most of us would never own.

Coming from a never owned a shotgun background now I'm incredibly curious and would like to know how useful a shotgun would be?

I've only recently started shooting and will be hunting mainly rabbits and foxes thus the choice of a 223 as my rifle.

So I guess I just want to know a bit more about shotguns.....it seems like a facinating topic with different sorts of ammo, chokes, types, etc.

Educate me please.

Ok. I'll start with this.

If you were only allowed two guns, chances are one would be a shotgun. Most likely a .22lr and a 12g.

If you were only allowed one gun, chances are it would be a shotgun.

Shotguns are incredibly versatile at short range. Need to know down a large pig? Then a 12g slug.
Need to frighten off some birds? Then birdfrite.
Then you have various size buck, etc.

Get close enough and a shotgun will do the job, regardless of what the job is.

The 12 gauge i have was first purchased by my grandpa when he was still a teenager. To give you and idea of how long ago that was, the reason he purchased it was to shoot wedgies that were taking his lambs. Ill never sell it

the thing about a shot gun is it will kill big game and small game we are allowed pump action gun we can put riffled barrels on one and extend our shots.
There are lots of hunters that its all they have it works and it works good .
shot guns can be had for a rather low price here and they will last your life.
I think the worry about the adler is becouse it is a gun that dont cost a lot every one will buy one.

I use my SB Boito to roll bunnies and foxes with, my Beretta SP1 I use to shoot clays with and might take it out to roll some bunnies too. I like the SB as I can carry it and a rifle which gives me greater flexibility when it comes to foxes which can be funny at times (sometimes you need a longer shot and sometimes you need something to shoot em a few ft away, they are just unpredictable at times and having both rifle and shotgun sorts that issue out nicely.

I have noticed a huge difference in prices esp for those competition guns, are they that much better or is it mainly just wood and scrollwork?

Lol!

The chokes adjust the pattern/spread and barrel length improves accuracy I believe?

I've three shotguns right now. First is a Remington 870 in 2 3/4 inch 20 gauge, I got it for upland bird hunting and before the lead shot ban for duck hunting. Second scattergun is a Browning A-5, long recoil, in 12 gauge 3 inch magnum, this is my current duck/waterfowl/turkey gun, I also picked up a slug/buckshot barrel for this gun so it could fill the deer/defense role. Third is a Stevens 311 side by side in 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge for Cowboy action shooting.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

The most important thing about shotguns is that they fit you right, try and find someone in the gunshop who really knows about shotgun fit - if it don't fit you right you won't be able to shoot ****** with it.

Good luck and let us know how you go with it all.

First time you fire one, you need to know its a little different to rifles.

You start with feet side by side close together. The shotgun sits just inside from your shoulder, slightly in to your chest.

Lean back slightly then pull the trigger.

We all expect the video of your first shot to be posted here

Lol!

Thankfully I have had the pleasure of firing a Saiga semi auto (ak47 style) at a range in the U.S. before so I should still be on my feet...

Who needs 2 when I've got the Chiappa X-Caliber :) 12g / 22LR all in one combo.

And it came with these...

All up it's good for 2¾” - 3” 12ga/22LR, 380, 9mm, 357mag / 38sp, 40S&W, 44mag, 45acp, 410/45colt, 20ga and can also double as a canoe paddle due to the polypropylene foam stock.

Probably one of the better "Prepper" combos legally available in NSW and it shoots surprisingly well considering with a red dot scope mounted.

Watch these vids mate, it will help explain what's involved in gun fit, shooting clays etc but can also be applied to the field in some ways. There's lots of good info on shooting shotguns on youtube, well worth looking at to learn more about the fine art of shotgun shooting

Sigh...

Looks like most shottys are wood stocked and I was hoping for a composite one as it'll be mainly for field work. Not many plain black ones besides the Akkar synthetic.

Either that or get over the fact that all that pretty scrollwork and wood will one day get banged up despite my best efforts.

You'll never be left up $hit creek without a paddle with that combo.

I recon combination guns are great, I'd love a .22 magnum / 12 gauge

I'd like one of those in 17HMR and 12 or 20 gauge. Probably 20 gauge, as you could keep the gun lighter and not have as much recoil as a 12 gauge.

In fact, the chiappa little badger by itself that folds in half is a really good rifle but itself. Chiappa is seemingly making some good stuff for survival and hunting :D

It seems to my jaundiced eye there are rifle people and shotgun people. Myself I am a rifle person, started on rifles, tutored in rifle hunting. I feel more comfortable with the sitting shot on ground animals.
Others by dint of family or tradition start on shotguns and continue.

have you used many of the inserts as yet? I am interested as there is a few people who have advertised the inserts on their own. From reading internet reviews it can be tricky to get the fired pistol case out of the insert, particularly with small rims like the 45LC.

You could fill it full of foam, that should take that hollow plastic type sound out of it (I know what you mean though they feel toy like (can't stand plastic crap in rifles) I'm a wood man through and through, altho if it was a decent synthetic stock I could live with it but 99% of the rifles that come with synthetic stocks are crap IMO.

Well I'm no expert on stocks coz I only have one rifle at the moment and that synthetic stock feels so much better. Might pony up a few more dollars and get a Miroko MK70, it might change my mind on wood stocks.

Nothing wrong with the Miroku shotguns mate, that should do the job nicely (even have a look at some 2nd hand ones) just make sure you get someone to fit it to you correctly or else you won't hit s**t with it (well not as well as you would if it fits you right anyway)
