Shotgun chokes and shot type

Post by Aussiehunter91 » 10 Aug 2015, 7:42 pm

Hey all,

I'm fairley new to shotguns I have a beretta 12g 686 silver pigeon that I've busted plenty of clays with but interested in taking it out to the bush to see what it can do. I'm under the impression that the chokes are for the spread of the shot? So a few questions. Can you only shoot certain shells out of certain chokes? Like if you were shooting birds with birdshot and a pig came by could you shoot slugs out of the same chokes or would you have to change chokes?

Also what type of shot do you use for different animals? My gun has 5 chokes and I've never changed them from how the guy at the gun shop put them so I want to make sure I'm doing things right and safe. Thanks for your time and help.

Thanks for your help mate. I might have to do a whole heap of research on this. I have internal chokes if that makes a difference. Are the chokes just for spread pattern?
