Shotgun cleaning

Post by juststarting » 19 Sep 2015, 11:21 pm

Hi All

Question, for shotgun cleaning... Brass jag or plastic or not at all (e.g. chux wipe wrapped around a brush)?

I have a brass jag, but pulling it out, the sound, made my heart stop. Or... do I unscrew it as it exists the muzzle and retrieve the rod, which sounds annoying.

Also, coated metal rod or wooden rod?

thanks

Here's how I do it.

I apply a generous amount of hoppes #9 solvent to two patches and push them through one barrel then flip them over and push em down the other barrel with my brass jag ( plastic / brass. .. doesn't matter )

Then I run a bronze brush back and forth a few times and follow that with another clean patch with #9 on it.

Leave it to soak , push through a dry patch and if it looks clean enough I spray the barrels with G96 and patch it out after letting it stand for 15 min.

I find with my jag , 2 patches at a time fits just right and I can turn them around and use them as semi clean patches early during the clean out.
I have a aluminum rod with my bronze permanently attached and a one piece steel rod with my jag on it ... I don't think that the type of rod matters because it doesn't touch the sides.

Of course there are other components that need cleaning from time to time and if you have screw in chokes make sure you remove them once in a while and keep the threads lubed to prevent them from rusting in place.

Bit of spray oil in the bore and just run a boresnake through it. Gets it nice and clean. Easy and quick too.

My main question is the jag.

This is what I have: http://cdn1.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd_ima ... 60-160.jpg

Fits a patch folded in half over the jag, through the barrel - no more than that. It's a pretty big chunk of brass actually. And when I pull that thing out, after the patch cleared the muzzle - the noise it makes is terrifying, nails on the blackboard... Thinking the bore is having the f#@$%#@k scratched out of it. Hence, asking about jags, mainly. Do you unscrew it as it clears and then just pull the rod out or do you pull the jag out with it, etc.

@oldbloke
That's a pretty cool approach actually, I like it. But doubt it will fit with my current jag. Never the less, I must try.

Cheers

Personally I have no stress in pulling jags back through the barrels. As if can be stuffed unscrewing it each time :lol:

Your barrel is harder than the jag, and the jag is not being pressured onto the barrel, just slid over it.

I know saying "don't worry" to someone who's worrying is annoying but.... I wouldn't worry about it :lol:

@Rocker
Ye, my brain says - relax guy, barrels are kinda made for spitting metal out of. Just wasn't too sure. And yeah, I'd sooner give up the shotgun, then unscrew the jag every time...

If in doubt you could put yourself in front of a chronograph but I'm pretty sure you're not putting the cleaning rod through as fast as the shot :lol:

I just use a rod with a plastic jag on it wrapped in either paper towel or any material I can cut patches out of, I just soak em in what ever solvent I have lying around, I also soak the chokes in petrol to remove all the plastic etc, then just give em a run through with a patched soaked in inox or lanox, wipe the outside of the gun, grease the threads on the chokes and and bearing surfaces and put it all back in Silicon Socks and back into the case.

I ended up buying a plastic jag. Just really didn't like the brass jag.

Just attach a stainless tornado brush to a cleaning rod don't use brass there to soft stainless tornado brush is the way to go and attach it to a battery drill and run it up and down the barrel with a solvent and that gets out all the plastic best way and quickest way to clean barrels after a big shoot.

Chrome bores are very durable ....

In my Perazzi ( without the 'protection' of chrome ) I STILL use the same method, of an alloy jag and cloth.

Lol, new. Just spray some crc or solent on it and because the paper is mildly abrasive ( I buy cheap paper. Lol) it removes most of the gunk in 2 or 3 wipes.

I am extremely particular when it comes to cleaning my shotguns to the point where, after each shoot I clean the gun until the inside of the barrels are mirror clean. I have recently purchased a new Beretta 692 and i have tried almost everyway possible to clean it but cannot seem remove the plastic from the bore completely. I have tried the boresnake,bronze brush,presoaked the bore with all the recomended products aswell as the drill down the bore trick. I have even made a special brush just for this purpose but havent yet succeeded. Even the guys at the gun store where ive purchased have had a go but found it a challenge and were going to ask the gunsmiths at beretta for some ideas. Does anyone out there have any thoughts on what else i could try?

Acetone will do it well. You just need to be real careful not to get in on any timber as it'll eat the finish obviously.
