Advice for first under/over shotgun

Post by TBJ » 20 Oct 2015, 10:39 am

Hi guys,
Im new around here, but not new to guns.
First off I shoot field and game sporting clays, occasionally I may shoot trap or skeet. I do shoot rabbits and foxes, but i really want my own gun for field and game. At the moment i am shooting my dads Browning Citori, 30" barrels, I do like this gun and do decently with it, i have shot with a couple of other peoples shotguns at field and game shoots, An SKB ( I really liked this gun), Baretta 687 (really liked this), an Akkar Churchill (too light) a Miroku Mk.10 (liked this one).
All the guns bar the Akkar had 30" barrels, i have been suggested Beretta 686, 692, etc , Browning B725, Miroku Mk.10 and Mk.11, I have also been told to get 30"+ barrels and a heavier gun because of my size, Im 6"3 and 100kg. I am happy to buy second hand (is this good or not) and spend up to $3500 maybe $4000 on a gun. I would like to have changeable chokes due to my large range of what I shoot. What else should I look for, and if I do buy a used gun what should I look at.
Thanks in Advance

You remind me of me - similar size, similar shooting preferences and maybe same eclectic taste in guns.

My suggestion is to buy new ( I took delivery of a second hand gun last weekend that did not resemble the sellers description, re: condition. Is currently with my gunsmith for repairs !! ) .... your budget will certainly have you owning and shooting something more than adequate.

I was in a similar boat to yourself a few weeks ago, my best suggestion is to head down to your local, shoulder a few talk to the guys and see what you like, i ended up settling on a new beretta 686 SP1 which i'll be picking up in 2 weeks hopfully, its all about fit and what features you want, i wanted screw in chokes, tight reliable action and over all just a quality firearm, the thing that got me with the beretta ( besides being my favoured shotgun ) is they offer free fitting and life time servicing i did shoulder a browning citori ( i think ) though also, it felt nice but is overall a bigger heavier gun

Nah, dont buy it down at your local, go to a licensed dealer..... do it the right way  :sarcasm:

But yes, if you're spending that amount on a shotty, it has to be a Beretta!

You mean that guy with the Ford Transit park behind the pub isn't a license firearms dealer? :sarcasm:
