What is this 'cleaning of shotguns' you speak??

usually used bore snake and oil (snake oil?) but getting to the point means that its getting hard to see through the bore?

Just give the muzzle a tap on the ground to get the debris out, and good to go ;)

OK, joking.... but seriously, theyre self cleaning aren't they :unknown:

Just buy a cleaning kit,, 12g I assume.
Any respecable gun solvent will do the job on a shot gun. To start the process l wrap toilet paper around the brush and bung on some eds red. After a couple of swabs I swap to a piece of cloth.

Yep, would do the job. I have used, wd40, crc, kero, diesel but currently use eds red. If you clean them often it dosnt take much effort at all.

I just use tetra gun solvent/oil on a wad of patches and push them through no need to be too thorough as its not as if accuracy is adversely affected it's more for maintaining the shotguns condition.

Bore snake before each shoot to get any dust, oil or grit out and wipe with inox after to get any hand prints off. I do the wood too.

Every brick or two I'll give it a mop full of Boretech eliminator or hoppes then give it a scrub with a nylon brush on a rod to help loosen any plastic fouling then just mop it out with shellite then oil. I'll give the choke threads a clean to remove that carbon build up and re oil the chokes and install. Wipe it down with inox and put it back in its gun sock.

For my 12g sporter and trap gun, for a "proper" clean I spray Ed's Red down the bore, use a tornado brush and then patch it out.

Only because I was under the impression the Lanox spray left a sticky grease residue of lanoline. I haven't used it but my dad used to spray it on his outboard motor when he still had a boat for that reason.

Me too !
A 'residue' aids in the fight against corrosion.
And .... all oils / solvents etc must be removed from the bore(s) before use.

The residue is the whole point.. solvent is the carrier, which allows the convenient deposition/distribution of the loob, solvent evaporates and leave the.......lubricant/protectant, obviously lost on some. :unknown:

Thats why you always add the sheep juice to Eds; it lubes and protects, leaves the hands moisturised as well

How quickly do solvents dissipate ?

If I return from a shoot and apply 'the right stuff' to bores etc, then choose to shoot the following day ....am I removing solvents during my 'pre-shoot' routine, or have they disappeared overnight ?

( you sound like the sorta fellow who oughta know )

"have they disappeared overnight " That would depend on:
The solvent and how volatile it is, the temperature, the air flow over the solvent, the surface area exposed to the air flow.

"how volatile it is" is a reflection of it's vapour pressure ( a physical property ), another words how quickly it evaporates. e.g. Petro, white spirits and metho all evaporate fairly rapidly but diesel or engine oil would evaporate very slowly.

But I would expect most would evaporate within an hour or two.
