Need A .410 for around the farm! What brand and config?

Post by MalleeFarmer » 02 Jan 2016, 7:58 am

Hi Guys I need a small shotgun around the farm for my missus to control rabbits, foxes and birds. :allegedly: what do you recommend she only has cat A/B. It will be registered in my name.

Why isn't she getting it registered in her name?

If on the farm, a PP licence will cost her absolutely $0.

When you say for the missus, do you mean 'for the missus', of for the uh.... yeah, its for you sweetness...
If I asked my missus how many firearms she owned, she couldnt say.... :)

Get a 12g...... real shotguns are measured in Gauge not Calibre :D

Recommend; a SxS 20inch, what do you want to spend??

410 fires the same shot at the same velocity as 12G. Just fewer of them. If that's the way she likes it, go for it.

Ok I should have given more background! Already have a 12g so don't need another one she is already licenced for PP. for birds bunnies and foxes even for the odd Scaley rope near the house as we have a nearly 2 yo son and one on the way.

Yea I appreciate that but this one is for utility :D not compensation :wtf: haha! I would like a SxS but still thinking of 410 perhaps just a single would be the go.

If its just a tool for around the farmhouse and you don't mind second hand, then perhaps something like this:

[Edit: Removed broken link. Link was for an old .410 SxS 20" barrel advertised on usedgunsas good condition, $150]

A few more pellets sounds worthwhile.
The few times I fired a 410 years ago, whatever was shot at continued running off! Never brought anything down for retrieval, rabbits especially (#6 shot@20m from memory) Shame it was useless, it was a nice gun. A fully folding double barrel, great for transportability.

Don't overthink this mate..... a .410 is a great little gun for the missus (and you too) to take care of farm pests. I was in a similar situation but wasn't happy with a single shot so I got a Stoeger 20" double barrel .410 - also sold as a Boito. Not cheap- mine cost me $569 but have never regretted it. Ammo is a little expensive but the wife can shoot it with confidence and it makes life easier for me!
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

I have a Pardus SB in 410Ga that I bought for my son to shoot snakes and crows with. Cheap as chips at $300 new, good quality and very suitable for the recoil sensitive. I have the black version with synthetic stock so no timber to worry about getting knocked around.

I have limited experience with .410s Remington's model 1100, a Savage 22/410 combo over/under, a side-by-side of a make I forget and a Mossberg 500 pump. Since I think that Remington has dropped the .410 chambering I'd go for the Mossberg pump gun.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

A pump is unnecessary as it's just for around the farm yard obviously it would be fun and useful but probably overkill a SxS would be plenty sufficient

Only if your a primary producer using it for pest control, and then you can only use it on that land for that purpose. Can't take it to the range or go hunting with it elsewhere.

Contract hunter too I guess as Mallee says?

I believe a physical disability is the only exception that will give a civilian a pump action here for sport/recreational hunting purposes.

I'm leaning towards a stoeger SxS coach gun does anyone have any experience with these? Also possibly a Hasan ultima

Great gun-grabber logic evident there.

Instead of let us use 1 gun in two places we need to buy more guns for the property and range.

Logic fail.
