Henry lever action .410 shotgun

Post by GLS_1956 » 27 Jan 2017, 2:35 am

I got the latest edition of American Rifleman Magazine, the NRA's member journal, and saw an add mentioning they have .410 bore lever guns. I'd not seen mention of these guns before and thought I'd pass it on. Here is a link:

I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Competition for the Rossi Rio Grande. I like the .410 but the ammo is over priced in Oz.

I imagine it's based on the 45 LC or 45/70 action. Is it a smooth bore ?

Edit: a quick read reveals that yep, 45/70 action and smooth bore. Like the Henry's I own I think it would cycle well.

I'd buy one for sure!
Will they be available here any time soon, do you think?

Sometimes people forget that these things shoot both bird and buck at the same velocity as 12 gauge with the right ammo. Just less pellets. Obviously, ammo varies.

Handy little guns and great for kids. But I was started off at 12 gauge as a kid so what do I know. Thank goodness they gave me light loads. Well, actually, they made me load the shells on a loader. But it was mostly 12 from the age of 7 or so.

I have never seen buckshot for 410 in aus.

I did use solids a lot years ago, with mixed results

We have it here.

That is the downside of 410, not a lot of varieties of shot.

I've reloaded .410 with 4 SG pellets. it would make a mean fox load for up to about 30 yards.Made a 4-5 inch pattern out of my old Mossberg bolt action.

Is reloading gear readily available?

You really dont need much gear to reload .410. You need a pin (such as a nail ground to shape) to knock out the old primer, a piece of dowel to knock the new primer in and push the wad down, a suitable scoop for the powder and shot, your fingers and a screw driver handle to finish the crimp. If a sizing die was needed, anyone with a lathe could whip one up to use in a vice or a reloading press.

I am a big fan of Henry's, but I can't help but think there is a reason the .410 has waned a bit in popularity. It would be a beautiful gun , no doubt. But it just seems very niche in its uses. There's nothing it can do that a 12g can't do a bit better. Bit lighter on the shoulder I guess. Just seems like it's usefulness is very limited. Just a personal opinion, just don't see them selling very many in OZ.

Cool. So reloading for a 410 is doable. If these become available, I'm getting one. I reckon it would be very hand around here. Lever 410 and a double 12g.

i looked into reloading the .410. there is dedicated .410 shotgun brass that 'should' last forever.

You can fireform .303 brass. I've done it for my Mossberg bolt action. Works well. .444 brass is another option.
