.410 shotgun recoil

G'day,

Just looking for a rough guide here, I've fired 12 gauge a couple of times but never a .410 bore shotty.

Recoil will be less obviously, roughly how much?

Half? Less?

A _lot_ less, even with slugs.
Roughly similar to a .223 rifle of the same weight, or a scoped .243 perhaps.

My 30" Stoeger Condor is 3.5kg. A 440gn (1-oz) load at 1200fps on 20gn of powder makes 16.7lb/ft of recoil energy.
The .410 model weighs 2.7kg. A 220gn (1/2-oz) load at 1200fps on 14gn of powder makes 5.9lb/ft of recoil energy - roughly one-third of the 12-gauge.

My 7mm-08 MDT LSS chassis is 5kg. Firing a 160gn bullet at 2500fps on top of 40gn of powder makes 10.4lb/ft of recoil energy.

not always as it seems with 410's.
a lightweight 410 with full loads,.....will often recoil (kick) more than a full size 12g.
kind of depends on the individual shotgun, and ammo used.
it's a energy vs weight sort of thing.
the last 410 i used kicked harder than my 12g trap gun for sure.

I've fired slugs through a very light single-barrel .410, recoil was hardly worth mentioning, mind you, the performance of the slugs was less than impressive as well :-)
In my experience, even the most pleasant 12-gauge still kicks way more than the .410.

Roughly speaking a .410 with half the shot weight of a given 12ga would have half the recoil based on the whole " equal and opposite reaction" pricipal.
.410 is a kids gun, not much recoil to speak of!

Bentaz, I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you on the .410 being a kids gun. In fact I find it to be just the opposite, the .410 is the experienced shooter's bore, with it's light shot payload and sparse pattern it is a gun that the experience shooter takes to the field or the range. I've seen many a quail escape the shot from a .410 only to fall to that of a 20 gauge or 12 gauge. On the skeet range I've only seen the best out there with .410s, and you never see the .410 on the trap line.

I will agree with you that there is a drastic difference if the felt recoil between a .410 and other shotguns bores. My perception is the .410's recoil is much less than that of a 12 ga gun, of course rarely do you have a .410 that weighs the same as a 12 ga. Now the last .410 I fired was in handgun form, a Bond Arms O/U derringer, and in that form it is a handful, the Taurus Judge is much more manageable.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Hey greyghost,
I am roughly 186cm 76klg, I own Early Boito 410,
I find it good to fire, I run 3" shells, also some solids
The solids do have more boot but are quite manageable.
I feel quite relaxed with this gun, therefore it makes the whole
experience of using it much more fun.

No point comparing full load .410 slugs to reduced recoil 12g shells.

Apples for apples loads it's about half.

But if you want it to shoot like a 12g buy a 12g ;)

Great snake gun - we always had one laying about growing up. Worked on rabbits inside about 20m too; in these scenarios it was much easier to use than dad's ancient single shot Lithgow with dovetails.

Dad's 410 would have been about a 20" I'd guess - and It never struck me as booting much, even when I was tiny squirt in primary school.
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?
